Maple Grove, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/27/2014 -- World Landforms, a place to uncover every possible hidden fact about the different landforms of the world, enables people to learn about shield volcano facts. This online portal can also be called an encyclopedia.

Talking about shield volcano, one of the representatives stated, “The interesting fact about shield volcanoes is that they are formed by effusive volcanic eruptions with magma flowing in all directions to create a shield-like form. They are built of weak viscous basaltic lava. The effusive eruptions allow lava to flow longer distances than other types of volcanic eruptions making larger and thinner sheets of lava. The continuous build of these sheets over a long period of time constructs the low broad profile of a shield volcano. Shield volcanoes are known as “Hawaiian” after the Hawaiian chain where they prominently occur.”

Focusing more on the locations of shield volcanoes, he said, “Shield volcanoes are found in many parts of the world where magma wells up called hotspots. Examples are the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain (Mauna Loa), the Galapagos Islands (Fernandina), Iceland shields and East Africa (Nyamuragira).”

Apart from shield volcano, Worldlandforms.com also enables enthusiasts to learn about almost all major landform of the world like Basins, Bay Canyons, Cliffs, Coasts, Lakes, Mountains, Oceans, Valleys, Swamps, and many more. In fact, at this online portal, one can get information about every type of landform.

Los Gatos, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/03/2014 -- Brand Spirit, Inc., an industry leader in branded products and apparel, is proud to announce a new, eco-friendly line of customizable apparel ideal for companies looking to support sustainable, green products.

“It’s not often that an innovative, new, T-shirt line comes along that we can offer to environmentally conscious companies that believe in corporate social responsibility.” Jenna Banks, Chief Branding Officer at Brand Spirit, Inc. said “It’s a ketchup bottle or a water bottle turned into a T-shirt…now that’s amazing!”

“What’s really fascinating is how cozy, comfortable and soft these revolutionary garments are, despite the fact that each shirt contains around six plastic bottles,” said Banks.

There are six different lines of t-shirts offered as well as hoodies, all made from recycled cotton and different types of recycled material. Lines available now feature colors like “Soda Bottle” Green (made from green plastic bottles,), “Beer Bottle” Brown (made from brown plastic bottles), “X-Ray” Grey (made from x-rays), “Food Tray” Black (made from used food containers) and “Water Bottle” Blue (made from plastic water bottles). In June 2014, the newest color option “Ketchup Bottle” pink will be offered, with its color coming from reddish bottles. ESI Modifies Green Energy Park in Response to Community Input

EnviroSolutions Holdings, Inc. (ESI) announced today that it has filed changes to its proposed Green Energy Park on the site of its construction debris landfill in Lorton Virginia.

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2014 -- EnviroSolutions Holdings, Inc. (ESI) announced today that it has filed changes to its proposed Green Energy Park on the site of its construction debris landfill in Lorton Virginia. The Green Energy Park concept was originally conceived in 2010 based on community suggestions and has since been modified numerous times based on input and feedback from various stakeholder groups, engineers and consultants, and County staff.

“Over the course of the public’s participation in the development of the Fairfax Green Energy Park proposal, residents of the local community and the County have spoken to many aspects of the plan,” said Conrad Mehan of ESI.

“There is significant backing for the green energy components of the proposal. However, in recent discussions some commentators expressed concerns about the size of the project, the term of the proposed extension and the need to protect local neighborhoods from the impact of truck traffic. As a member of this community, ESI has listened and responded.”

On Wednesday, March 26th ESI submitted amended Development Conditions to address these issues.

- ESI&aposs revised application would reduce the length of the requested extension by 27 percent (or 6 years) to year-end 2034. ESI has also agreed to enter into a covenant, as requested by the local community, which would assure the community of the permanent closure of the landfill at year-end 2034.

- ESI has agreed to a reduction of 36% from the remaining available height of the landfill from the currently approved 412 feet, thereby mitigating the visual impact of the site.

- ESI would maintain its commitment to give up its rights in perpetuity to the mixed waste recycling facility across Furnace Road opposite the landfill. This would forever protect the road network north of the landfill from being impacted by truck- related activity from the site.

- ESI also remains committed to providing significant financial contributions to the county and local stakeholders. This includes $3.2M for local ball fields and recreational facilities and $10 million for local community needs. In addition, Fairfax County would receive an estimated $2.5 million in shared revenues from the renewable energy and the equivalent of $7.0 million in electricity for use at local County facilities.

ESI remains fully committed to the ideals and implementation of the Green Energy Park with all of its four renewable energy elements. The Green Energy Park would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.6 million tons over the life of the project and includes a renewable energy education feature for the public. The facility would support the County&aposs long-term disposal and recycling capacity goals necessary for redevelopment and revitalization projects in Fairfax County and would create an incubator for renewable energy jobs and technologies in Fairfax County.

“ESI has always placed a high priority on being a good neighbor and a great corporate citizen. As part of our commitment to Fairfax County and Lorton, we listened to the community and we responded with meaningful modifications to our proposal,” concluded Mehan.

New England Remediation Services, LLC Earns Lead Removal Certification

$

0

Concord, NH -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/17/2014 -- Ron Pinciaro from New England Remediation Services, LLC, has just announced that he has earned his New Hampshire certification as a lead abatement supervisor. In addition, key employee Chandara Khim also earned his certification. The course, which was conducted by the Institute for Environmental Education, Inc. in Wilmington, Mass., consisted of 32 hours of intensive training. As Pinciaro noted, on-going continuing education is required for his company to maintain the certification.

According to information on the Lead Certification New Hampshire website, the new Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) program’s requirements apply to projects if they disturb 6 square feet of interior lead paint surface and/or 20 square feet of exterior lead paint surface. The new rule, which applies to general contractors, property managers, renovation contractors and many others, requires EPA certification by April 22. Businesses that are not registered with the EPA will risk being fined up to $37,500 per day.

“The goal of the new Rule is to have contractors trained in how to conduct renovation activities safely to reduce the risk of lead poisoning,” noted an article on the New Hampshire Department of Safety website, adding that common renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint, such as sanding, cutting, and demolition, create hazardous lead dust and chips that may be harmful to children and adults.

“The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is working with the EPA to distribute the information to contractors so they can register and become certified before the deadline.”

Because Pinciaro understands the dangers that are associated with exposure to lead paint, he felt it was crucial to go through the intensive lead removal certification program as soon as possible. As an article on the EPA’s website explained, lead is especially dangerous to children because their smaller and still-growing bodies absorb more of the heavy metal than adults. In addition, babies and toddlers are at a higher risk of developing lead poisoning because they are more likely to put things in their mouth that may have been covered with lead based paint. Adults can also be affected by lead; for example, by breathing lead dust that comes from old and deteriorating paint, and during repair or renovation work.

Unfortunately, it does not take a lot of lead to cause damage to the brain; scientists have found that inhaling or ingesting a small quantity of lead on a regular basis can be extremely harmful.

Specifically, the lead stays in the bloodstream for about a month or so, before heading to the organs, where it will remain for six to eight months. Eventually it ends up in the bones, where it stays for a whopping 30 years.

Anybody who would like to learn more about New England Remediation Services is welcome to visit the company’s website; there, they can read more about their remediation and renovation services.

Edison NJ Homeowners Oppose Verizon Plans for Cell Tower in Residential Neighborhood

$

Edison, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/19/2014 -- A proposed plan to construct a cellular tower next to residential housing in Edison New Jersey drew fierce opposition from residential property owners at a recent Edison Zoning Board Hearing. Please go to http://stopcelltower.org/ for more information.

The proposal was made by Verizon Wireless and a commercial property owner in Edison NJ to build a large cellular tower in very close proximity to residential homes on a portion of the Festival Plaza shopping center that borders residential homes on Knapp Avenue in Edison. The cell tower would be as close as approximately 25 yards to the nearest residential property. The Festival Plaza Shopping Center might be better known as the former Tops Appliance Shopping Center and was purchased by the current owner, Michael McCarthy, in 2008. The proposed cell tower and lightning rod would extend approximately 96 feet above ground level. The cell tower would be located directly behind Knapp Avenue residential properties in an area previously required by the Edison Township Zoning Board to be a buffer zone between the shopping center and the residential properties.

Years ago, the shopping center was expanded to allow retail space along the area that runs parallel to Knapp Avenue. But when this expansion was approved, the Edison Zoning Board required a buffer zone in the area between this newer retail space and the private homes. A more recent attempt to expand the shopping center parking lot approximately 12 years ago was denied by the Edison Zoning Board. At that time Edison homeowners protested the proposal arguing that the further expansion would effectively eliminate the buffer zone.

One property owner opposing the cell tower at an Edison Zoning Board Hearing on January 28, 2014 said the cell tower is too close to residential properties and further stated that cell towers next to residential housing always negatively impacts home values. He said that most people faced with the choice between buying a home next to a cell tower versus a home not next to a cell tower, would usually opt for the home not located next to the cell tower. This, he argued, causes reduced demand for properties near cellular towers, and reduced demand always translates into lower property values. The homeowner stated this is unfair to homeowners. The homeowner also argued that previous attempts to expand the shopping center in the area of the buffer zone were denied, and the use of the buffer zone for any commercial purposes would be unfair, since the buffer zone was a requirement for the prior expansion of the shopping center that runs parallel to Knapp Avenue. Another resident argued against the approval of the cell tower citing potential health risks.

The owner of the Festival Plaza Shopping Center, Michael McCarthy, in sworn testimony before the Edison Township Zoning Board on January 28 indicated that his motivation for allowing Verizon to build a cellular tower on his shopping center property was not money, but instead was a desire to help Verizon increase their capacity. Mr. McCarthy stated that his income from Verizon would only amount to roughly the equivalent of the rental cost of a 3-bedroom apartment in the area. A Knapp Avenue homeowner owner addressed that claim by Mr. McCarthy with skepticism, saying that the rent on a 3-bedroom apartment in the area is only approximately $1700 to $1800 per month and that it seems likely that Mr. McCarthy’s financial benefit would be much greater. Further, the Knapp Avenue homeowner stated that Mr. McCarthy and Verizon would financially benefit from the cell tower at the direct expense of nearby residential property owners, whose property values would suffer as a result of a cell tower being situated so close to their back yards.

The Verizon representatives included legal and engineering experts, including one said to be flown in from California to attend the January 28th hearing in Edison. Verizon representatives attempted to make the case that the company needs to expand their usage capacity to serve an increased demand for wireless services. Verizon representatives also stated the company hit capacity usage for this area in July of 2013 and December of 2013. In rebuttal, an Edison residential property owner said that Verizon cellular service seems to be consistently strong in the area and recalled that during the turmoil in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Verizon cell services worked well throughout the area, while other cellular carriers experienced significant service problems and outages. The homeowner stated there are better areas where Verizon should seek to locate any new cell towers which should be areas much further away from residential housing.

The next hearing on the matter by the Edison Township Zoning Board is scheduled for April 22, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Edison Municipal Building located at 100 Municipal Boulevard in Edison. The public is invited to attend and to voice any objections to the Verizon proposal.

Tullytown, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/17/2014 -- As the weather warms up, properties that utilize underground oil storage tanks for heat may begin to see the effects of sludge buildup, resulting from condensation during the winter. The International Dark Sky Association Celebrates International Dark Sky Week 2014

Join the IDA for seven days of celebration, learning and action!

Tucson, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/18/2014 -- Created in 2003 by high-school student Jennifer Barlow, International Dark Sky Week has grown to become a worldwide event and a key component of Global Astronomy Month. Each year it is held in April around Earth Day and Astronomy Day. This year celebrations begin Sunday, April 20, and run through Friday, April 26.

In explaining why she started the week, Barlow said, “I want people to be able to see the wonder of the night sky without the effects of light pollution. The universe is our view into our past and our vision into the future. … I want to help preserve its wonder."

International Dark Sky Week draws attention to the problems associated with light pollution and promotes simple solutions available to mitigate it.

Why Does Light Pollution Matter?

The nighttime environment is a crucial natural resource for all life on Earth, but the glow of uncontrolled outdoor lighting has hidden the stars, radically changing the nighttime environment.

Before the advent of electric light in the 20th century, humans experienced a night sky brimming with stars that inspired science, religion, philosophy, art and literature including some of Shakespeare’s most famous sonnets.

The common heritage of a natural night sky is rapidly becoming unknown to the newest generations. In fact, millions of children across the globe will never see the Milky Way from their own homes.

Scientists are only just beginning to understand the negative repercussions of losing this natural resource. A growing body of research suggests that the loss of the natural nighttime environment is causing serious harm to human health and the environment.

For nocturnal animals in particular, the introduction of artificial light at night could very well be the most devastating change humans have made to their environment. Light pollution also has deleterious effects on other organisms such as migrating birds, sea turtle hatchlings, and insects.

Humans are not immune to the negative effects of light in their nighttime spaces. Excessive exposure to artificial light at night, particularly blue light, has been linked to increased risks for obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes and breast cancer.

Isn't Nighttime Lighting Important for Safety & Security?

There is no clear scientific evidence that increased outdoor lighting deters crime. It may make people feel safer but it does not make them safer. The truth is bad outdoor lighting can decrease safety by making victims and property easier to see.

Glare from overly bright, unshielded lighting creates shadows in which criminals can hide. It also shines directly into the eyes, constricting our pupils. This diminishes the ability of the human eye to adapt to low-light conditions and leads to poorer nighttime vision, dangerous to motorists and pedestrians alike.

Another serious side effect of light pollution is wasted energy. Wasted energy costs money, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and compromises energy security.

What Can Be Done?

The good news is that light pollution is reversible and its solutions are immediate, simple and cost-effective. Here are a few simple things that concerned citizens can do to confront the problem and take back the night:

- Check home lighting. Shield outdoor lighting, or at least angle it downward, to minimize “light trespass” beyond your property lines. Use light only when and where needed. Motion detectors and timers can help. Use only the amount of illumination required for the task at hand.
- Attend or throw a star party. Many astronomy clubs and International Dark Sky Places are celebrating the week by holding public events under the stars.
- Talk to neighbors. Explain that poorly shielded fixtures waste energy, produce glare and reduce visibility. Give them an IDA brochure from the IDA website.
- Become a Citizen Scientist with GLOBE at Night and document light pollution in your neighborhood and share the results. Doing so, contributes to a global database of light pollution measurements.
- Photograph the sky and enter the 2013 International Earth and Sky Photo Contest.
- Download, Watch, and Share "Losing the Dark," a public service announcement about light pollution. It can be downloaded for free and is available in 13 languages.
- Explore Online. Join IDA on Facebook and Twitter (hashtag #IDSW2014), and check out the IDA website, which features a different theme for each day of the week. Visit IDA daily and learn something new.

David Evans Seeks Funding Through Kickstarter Campaign for Photographing the Maldives Before It 'Drowns'

A travel photographer creates a breathtaking permanent record of an island nation that may be among the first to ‘drown’.

Male, Maldives -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/21/2014 -- The Maldives is kind of like the canary in the coal mine for climate change due to low elevation and vulnerability to sea level rises.

Photographing the Maldives is harder than anyone would expect…as the Lonely Planet guide says regarding the cost of accommodation, ‘ouch!’. Evans has photographed in The Maldives once before, and the other thing that presented an unexpected challenge was the heat and humidity, especially with how poorly film reacts to such a harsh environment.

As a photographer, Evans is frequently moved by the power of the medium to instill meaningful change in human perception and create action.

Seeking to raise awareness, Evans hopes to inspire the public to save places like The Maldives. She doesn’t deserve to drown. There is a sadness that envelops human-kind when beautiful things die. He’d like to remind as many people as he can to cherish and preserve that beauty. She is real and her people are real and they are waving for our help. She represents all our actions and consequences. We can’t let her out of our sight.

His aim is to again visit this reluctant barometer in the real-world high stakes game of climate change, and to create a kind of permanent record by photographing a portfolio of large format panoramic images on film, and from these create large wall canvas prints. These are intended to be windows of peace and beauty in our mostly routine lives, and every day real reminders of the very real possibility of such innocence lost forever.

A seaplane to Maldives can cost upwards of $500, and food and accommodation prices are closely linked to the isolation and travel logistics presented by such a large chain of atolls in the middle of the ocean which is why Evans turned to crowdfunding to help fund this important trip.

This project will only be funded if at least $10,000 is pledged by Sun, May 11 2014 5:55 AM +05:30.

New AEERC President Credits Cleveland Roots for Success

$

Washington, DC -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/21/2014 -- American Energy Education and Research Center, Inc. (AEERC) has a mission to provide education and raise awareness for matters related to America’s renewable and nonrenewable energy has named Benedictine High School and John Carroll University graduate John Browne to the position of President.

The timing comes just prior to Mr. Browne’s sixth non-fiction release, The Alternative Lie; a book that discusses solutions to Washington’s flawed energy agenda. In the book, Browne makes it clear he’s not anti-alternative green energy, saying, “I believe in an all hands on deck approach to America’s energy question, but we need solutions that are affordable. We don’t need $100,000.00 battery powered luxury vehicles and we don’t have an extra $30,000.00 lying around to outfit our homes with solar panels. I feel we have a moral responsibility to be wise stewards over our environment. If we conduct our business with this in mind then the human part of equation is solved.”

John Browne began his journey at The Syndicate Information and News Network, where he still serves as President, has grown into one of the nation’s premier firms in database development. In 2011, he formed The Legacy Reserve to act as the holding company for his various businesses. Over the past decade he has—quite successfully— forayed into the oil and gas segment. His oil drilling and production company has hit 15 straight oil strikes with profitable production from all 15; a highly unusual scenario for a small oil drilling and production company. Progress didn’t end there for Browne. In 2013, Political Science Strategy and Marketing Services, another company he founded, was recognized by 8x8, Inc. as one of the fastest growing companies in its sector.

He attended Benedictine High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a standout defensive end and tight end for the school’s football team. He opted to attend John Carroll University, right across the street from the home he grew up in on Carroll Blvd.

While pursuing an undergraduate degree in Sociology at John Carroll University, John discovered an interest in data and statistics, while also serving on the football team as defensive captain. Since those days, he has developed an expertise in Data Science, Demography, and Profiling.

He’s the youngest of eleven children born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and attributes his success to God and his parents (Mike & Betty Browne). I can’t do anything without faith. I put my faith in God and go to work”. A lesson he learned at Benedictine High School where the motto is Ora et Labora – Pray and Work. “It’s a relationship I have with God. I work - He answers.” Benedictine High School, John Carroll University, his father, and participation in athletics furthered his appreciation for discipline and preparation, instilling an overriding business philosophy to never be outworked.

There have been a number of John Carroll University graduates in the news as of late: Greg Roman, Offensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49’ers; Tom Telesco, General Manager for the San Diego Chargers; David Caldwell, General Manager for the Jacksonville Jaguars; Josh McDaniels, Offensive Coordinator  for the New England Patriots; Nick Caserio, Director of Player Personnel for the New England Patriots(University School graduate); Brian Polian, Head Football Coach for University of Nevada; and of course, 15 year veteran and NFL great, London Fletcher. With the exception of Fletcher, who transferred from Kent State, all of the aforementioned were teammates of John Browne (defensive end) on the 1995 John Carroll University OAC Championship football team, coached by Tony DeCarlo.

Browne, who played an important role on that team as the defensive captain was asked to comment about his former teammates, “There’s nothing former about the connection. We’re teammates for life. In my opinion, it started at the top with Tony DeCarlo. What separated Coach DeCarlo was that he didn’t allow sideshows to detract from the main objective – winning. He understood that in order to build a team you have to build a family.”

“All the guys from that ‘95 team are special, and many more not mentioned have become successful fathers and professionals. Recently, Coach Kehres from Mount Union College made mention that intelligence is the reason for their success, but intelligence doesn’t keep your eyes open when you’re working eighteen hour days. I know for a fact that Greg (Roman) regularly worked those hours. Greg and I were very close friends. He’s incredibly disciplined, determined, and analytical. He’s not a checkers kind of guy – he’s chess all the way. He’s a man of high character and integrity. Tommy (Telesco) is a true gentleman. He’s a class act, and was always impressed by his positive attitude. Dave (Caldwell) is an extremely loyal guy and much tougher than people think. He’s not the type to tip his hand. When all the chips are on the table, he knows exactly how to step it up. Josh (McDaniels) is a math wizard! I think he must have a CPU for a brain. He is confident, sharp, and has an incredible sense of humor. Josh worked with me for a few years between Michigan State and The Patriots. It was a sad day when he moved on to New England. I didn’t know Nick Caserio well, having been a senior when he was a freshman, but I definitely noticed him. His work ethic and leadership skills will make him a perfect choice to lead any organization. I’m excited about the opportunity Brian Polian has as Head Coach at The University of Nevada. Brian earned everything he has right now. He has faced many frustrating moments and disappointments along the way, but showed real grit and determination. He will build a winning tradition by developing great men. London (Fletcher), unfortunately, transferred the year after my graduation. I’m honored to have shared some special moments with them. Their best is yet to come, and I hope to be a witness.”

Browne says he doesn’t have plans for the future, “I’ll keep working and rely on God to provide the answers.”

Coleman Elementary of San Rafael Launches 5th Season of Cool the Earth Program

Just in time for Earth Day

San Rafael, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/23/2014 -- Coleman Elementary in San Rafael, CA will launch its fifth year running Cool the Earth’s Climate Action Program this month as part of its Earth Day program. For four years Tanya Burdick has lead the program at Coleman— students have taken over 4800 actions, saving approximately 3,500,000 lbs. of carbon. That is the equivalent of taking almost 300 cars off the road!

Cool the Earth’s optimistic approach to addressing climate change through small, simple actions makes it a natural fit for elementary school kids. When Tanya heard about Cool the Earth from a friend at a nearby school, she immediately felt it was something she could get behind. “I really loved the idea of doing something that kids would get excited about and understand, and have fun at the same time,” said Tanya.

This year a total of 15 Marin County schools will run the Cool the Earth program. With the recent drought, and the County goals of zero waste by 2025, as well as its pledge to implement the United Nations 21 action steps to sustainability, getting school kids engaged in small actions that reduce waste, as well as energy and water use, can have a huge impact county-wide.

Actions include everyday things like turning off lights when leaving a room, taking shorter showers, and walking or biking instead of taking the car. These are things every child can do at home, and as Carleen Cullen, Executive Director of Cool the Earth points out, “Who better to get parents to change their actions and behaviors —parents will do anything for their kids!”

It turns out, she is right. Starting with kids in their own homes creates a real difference. A Stanford Study found 34.6% of students and their families take 2 or more climate “saving” actions, and two-thirds of those families continue with that behavior creating real change at home, in the community and that adds up. For Cool the Earth and the Coleman kids, acting locally creates change globally.

ABOUT COOL THE EARTH
Cool the Earth is a nonprofit environmental organization that has worked with over one quarter million kids and their parents. Launched in 2007 by Marin County parents, Carleen and Jeff Cullen, who were inspired to take action after seeing the documentary film An Inconvenient Truth.

These volcano formations take place due to a number of eruptions for several thousand years. These volcanoes are tall and conical in shape, and are formed when hot lava escapes through the ruptures or fissures and flows a long way. Andesite magma generally forms the composite cones.
