First International Dark Sky Park in the Southeast US Designated

The International Dark-Sky Association recognizes the Blue Ridge Observatory and Star Park and is pleased to acknowledge the work of Mayland Community College (MCC) for protecting the dark sky.

Tucson, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/24/2014 -- The Appalachian Mountains of have stood as silent witnesses to the uninterrupted rain of starlight for nearly a half-billion years, but artificial light now threatens this nightly show. In honor of notable local efforts to preserve the natural nighttime landscape of North Carolina, the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) announced today it has designated the first International Dark Sky Park in the southeastern United States.

In recognizing the Blue Ridge Observatory and Star Park, IDA is pleased to acknowledge the work of Mayland Community College (MCC) in preserving a threatened dark-sky location while advancing its educational mission and vision of bringing the experience of primeval night to locals and visitors alike.

“While it is one of the smaller parks in our program, we expect Blue Ridge Observatory and Star Park to make a big splash as a Silver-tier International Dark-Sky Park,” said IDA Executive Director Bob Parks.

The Blue Ridge Observatory and Star Park is situated six miles west of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The six-acre (2.4-hectare) site, surrounded by rugged mountain terrain and the Pisgah National Forest, is owned by Yancey County (NC) and managed by MCC. It is co-located with the EnergyXchange, a project in which methane waste gas emitted by an old landfill heats horticultural greenhouses and artists’ studios.

Jon Wilmesherr, MCC Director of Learning Resources Center and Distance Education who led the effort to secure the IDA award, is optimistic that the Star Park will serve as a model for land management by colleges and universities. “I hope other educational institutions will consider the benefits of sponsoring an IDA star park, where the demonstration of lighting conservation can lead visitors to a better understanding of the urgent need for the preservation of the natural night sky,” Wilmesherr said.

A Park of Many Firsts
While each dark sky site recognized by IDA offers its own particular set of features, Blue Ridge Observatory and Star Park has several characteristics that are unique among the 29 worldwide International Dark Sky Places. It is the first:
- located in the southeastern United States;
- operating under an institution of higher learning; and
- having outdoor lighting consisting entirely of fully-shielded, low-color-temperature light emitting diode (LED) fixtures upon receiving IDA recognition.

Given administrative oversight by a single organization and the few artificial lights already at the EnergyXchange, converting all of the site’s fixtures to dark-sky-friendly LED was straightforward and cost effective. MCC hopes the Star Park will be a regional leader in the implementation of such novel, energy-efficient lighting technologies at public facilities.

The Blue Ridge Astronomy Group (BRAG), a local amateur astronomy society, was instrumental in supporting MCC’s application to the Dark Sky Places Program. According to Bob Hampton, BRAG President, “Our Star Park will begin life as an isolated oasis of darkness mostly surrounded by a desert of light pollution, but our efforts will help that oasis to grow and expand – to push back against the sky glow.”

“We have an incredible opportunity to be an example to others who might go home and take another look at the lighting and light pollution where they live, and realize that it doesn’t need to be that way,” Hampton said.

New Life for an Old Site
The EnergyXchange is among the pioneers of waste gas utilization on small, rural landfills, and is one of the nation’s model energy recovery projects. It captures an amount of carbon in the form of methane gas equivalent to planting 14,000 acres (5,666 hectares) of trees or taking 21,000 cars off North Carolina roads each year according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates. Its presence has transformed the disused landfill, built atop a former mica mine, into a local center of activity for artists and agriculturalists alike. The latest rebirth of the site focuses on a different natural resource: dark night skies.

Identifying the Star Park for potential IDA recognition began soon after MCC assumed management of the site in 2013. MCC, ranked among the top community colleges in the United States, plans to situate an observatory on the property featuring a state-of-the-art 34-inch (0.87-meter) telescope dedicated to educational and public outreach activities. The Samuel L. Phillips Family Foundation, a local nonprofit organization, provided funding for fabrication of the telescope’s main mirror.

Dr. John Boyd, President of MCC, anticipates significant benefits to the community from locating the telescope under the dark skies at Blue Ridge Star Park. “This entirely public observatory will offer evening and late night viewing through the largest public telescope in the southeast,” Boyd said. “Our observing programs will provide an interesting, affordable, and educational family outing for the people of western North Carolina and the region.”

MCC will partner with BRAG to offer dedicated on-site programming for quarterly dark sky events, as well as to implement a long-term plan to monitor the quality of the night sky over the Star Park for years to come.

About the IDA Dark Sky Places Program
IDA established the International Dark Sky Places conservation program in 2001 to recognize excellent stewardship of the night sky. Designations are based on stringent outdoor lighting standards and innovative community outreach. Since the program began, six Communities, 15 parks and eight reserves have received International Dark Sky designations. Consider the Scientific Evidence on Cell Phone Safety Say Renowned Medical and Public Health Experts in an Open Letter to Senator Rosalyn Baker

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/26/2014 -- Renowned medical and public health experts, released a letter urging Senator Roslyn Baker to reconsider her stance on a senate bill calling for cell phones sold in Hawaii to come with a prominent health warning. Earlier this month, Senator Josh Green of Kona, Ka‘u introduced the Senate Bill titled SB 2571, a measure calling for cell phones sold in Hawaii to come with a prominent health warning -- similar to what smokers see on the sides of cigarette packages to warn them of danger.

Senator Green, a physician who chairs the Health Committee, said he introduced the bill because he thinks consumers need to be directed to radiation warnings already listed within the device. The original version of Senate Bill SB 2571 would have required the label to read, “This device emits electromagnetic radiation, exposure to which may cause brain cancer. Users, especially children and pregnant women, should keep this device away from the head and body.” Green said he took the language from the warning within his iPhone. He said he is open to the size of the label being reduced. In its current form, Senate Bill SB 2571 would require cellphones sold in Hawaii to contain a warning label covering nearly a third of the back of the device.

"We call on Senator Baker to allow a full public hearing on this bill. Democracy rests on the freely given consent of the governed. How can people consent to information that is buried inside manuals or phones about how to use these devices more safely? People have a right to know how to use technology safely. Senator Baker should honor that right,” said Dr. Devra Davis, Founder of the Environmental health Trust, who joins her peers in the open letter to Senator Baker.

Senate Bill SB 2571 has already passed out of the Senate Health Committee and could be heard next by the Consumer Protection Committee in the next 30 days. The group has published a public letter to Senator Baker to consider the studies that back up evidence of cell phone safety.

The letter in its entirety:

The Honorable Senator Rosalyn Baker

February 23, 2014

Dear Senator Baker,

We commend the Senate Committee on Health for having passed SB2571. Recent scientific research conducted affirms the wisdom of this legislation. Therefore, in the interest of the citizens of Hawaii please allow this bill to be heard and hopefully passed. We are not only concerned about brain tumors, but also as phones are currently carried today (in pockets while on) we are concerned about damage to fetuses, female reproductive organs and damage to sperm.

Please consider recently published scientific information:

January, 2014: New International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) document on the Electromagnetic Spectrum released: detailed 1-page visual with reference to cell phone exposure as a possible human carcinogen acknowledged by the National Cancer Institute. http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Publications/Review2014-Radiation-Fatiha.pdf

April, 2013: International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization issued its Monograph that addresses whether cellular telephone RF EMF radiation presents a risk of cancer to users. The IARC re-affirmed its official classification that cellular radiation is a Group 2B carcinogen along with lead, automobile exhaust, and other toxic substances including DDT, heptachlor, and styrene and they have now released their 480 page Monograph that provides the details of the basis of the classification in this the most significant health report on mobile phone radiation ever published. The Monograph concludes that:

“Due to closer proximity of the phone to the brain of children compared with adults, the average exposure from use of the same mobile phone is higher by a factor of 2 in a child’s brain and higher by a factor of 10 in the bone marrow of the skull (p. 408),

“Positive associations have been observed between exposure to radiofrequency radiation from wireless phones and glioma and acoustic neuroma. (p. 421),

“Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields are possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B)

Other recent sources:

1. A new study by breast cancer surgeons found a link to unusual breast tumors in young women who keep cell phones in their bras and have no genetic markers for the disease; http://www.hindawi.com/crim/medicine/2013/354682/

2. A December, 2011 study from the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California found statistically significant annual increases in frontal and temporal lobe grade IV brain cancers (glioblastoma multiforme) from 1992 to 2006. Those are the areas of the brain closest to where the cell phone is typically held. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1878875011006863

3. In October, 2013 the Italian Supreme Court ruled in favor of a worker who developed a tumor in the head due to long-term use of mobile phones on the job. Importantly, the ruling underscored discrepancies between the low evidence of risk found by industry-funded studies and the higher evidence of risk found by independent studies. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/19/us-italy-phones-idUSBRE89I0V320121019

4. Environmental and Human Health Inc. “Cell Phones: Technology, Exposures, Health Effects” http://www.ehhi.org/reports/cellphones/

5. On July 12, 2012 the American Academy of Pediatrics sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) urging the FCC to open a formal inquiry into radiation standards for cell phones and other wireless products adding “The FCC has not assessed the standards for cell phone radiation since 1996 and that “children are… disproportionately impacted by all environmental exposures, including cell phone radiation”. http://wifiinschools.com/uploads/3/0/4/2/3042232/american_academy_of_pediatrics_letter_asking_for_government_review_of_levels.pdf

The state of Hawaii faces potential major liability costs for employees that may be diagnosed with a brain tumor who use cell phones as part of their work. Also, with the pending epidemic of brain cancers and other diseases attributed to wireless radiation, this will have an impact on public health care costs in Hawaii. It is estimated that a single case of initial treatment of one brain tumor averages $500,000.

It is also relevant to note that on February 26, 2013 Verizon Communications Inc. reported the following liability risk in its Annual Report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission,

“…our wireless business also faces personal injury and consumer class action lawsuits relating to the alleged health effects of wireless phones or radio frequency transmitters, and class action lawsuits that challenge marketing practices and disclosures relating to alleged adverse health effects of handheld wireless phones. We may incur significant expenses in defending these lawsuits. In addition we may be required to pay significant awards or settlements.”

In the light of the evidence above we impress upon you to allow SB2571 to be heard toward the goal of informing consumers as to safer use of this ubiquitous device. People deserve the right to know about safety information currently embedded within the phones or printed in small type in pamphlets few read. We do not advocate against this valuable technology. We want users to be informed at point of sale how to use the device as intelligently and safely as possible. We applaud your efforts to ensure consumer protection by promoting this basic right.

Very truly yours,

Cool the Earth Kicks off 2014 Climate Program Enrollment Campaign

$

Just for Kids!

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/27/2014 -- Cool the Earth’s Climate Action Program today launched its 2014 enrollment campaign. The free, ready-to-roll, climate action program educates K-8 students and their families about climate change, inspiring them to take simple actions to reduce their carbon footprint at home, at school, and in their communities. Parents or teacher volunteers run the program for each school.

Cool the Earth uses positive messages and makes it fun and easy to implement with rewarding results. Based on the “trickle up,” theory, where children learn and then are empowered to lead their families in behavior changes at home and in their communities, the 6-week program creates real change.

According to a 2013 Stanford University study, through the CTE program, families took more personal actions to reduce their carbon footprint, considered the environment when making purchases, and 38% went on to take civic action. Trickle up meets trickle down.

Developed with busy parents and teachers in mind, the ready-to-roll toolbox includes all of the program materials and collateral they need to easily get started:

- Kick-Off Assembly: This spirit-filled event is where it all begins!
- Timeline and Action Calendar
- Action Coupons: Take an action, turn in a coupon, and get a reward.
- Action Goal Banner: See how all those actions add up to make a big difference.
- Program Enhancements: Further ways to engage students and inspire action.

Cool the Earth’s Climate Action program highlights pragmatic solutions to address climate change that leave kids and parents feeling empowered and inspired. Since 2007 Cool the Earth has worked alongside over a quarter million children from almost 500 schools to save over 2 million pounds of carbon.

“We are so excited to kick-off the 2014 program,” said Carleen Cullen, Cool the Earth founder and executive director. “Worry about climate runs deep, yet action is still shallow. I know some people who can help change this and they weigh about 60 pounds, stand only 3 feet tall, and are missing some teeth! Who better than kids to show their parents how to begin? Little is huge.”

“The CTE program went really well, ” said parent Heidi Rhymes from Petaluma, CA. “Parents who considered themselves pretty green were deeply challenged by their kids (particularly the younger ones) to do even better – turn off lights, bike to school, pick up trash, etc. I was impressed with the positive feedback we got throughout the program from the kids, families and the administrators.”

The Climate Action Program is inspiring kids and families across the country to take positive steps to help slow climate change. When you bring together families, hope, and action, the result is big change, and it begins at home.

About Cool the Earth
Cool the Earth is a nonprofit environmental organization that has worked with over one quarter million kids and their parents. Launched in 2007 by Marin County parents, Carleen and Jeff Cullen, who were inspired to take action after seeing the documentary film An Inconvenient Truth.

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/05/2014 -- Renowned medical and public health experts released an open letter to Maine officials highlighting key scientific evidence for legislators to reconsider a stance on a senate bill calling for a label on cell phones to be plainly visible on the outside of the product packaging alerting customers to the safety notifications.

Introduced by Rep. Andrea Boland (D-ME), this bill provides that a retailer may not sell at retail in this state a cellular telephone unless the cellular telephone and its packaging bear a warning label relating to the potential health effects associated with nonthermal effects of cellular telephone radiation. It requires the manufacturer of the cellular telephone to provide the warning labels to the retailer at no cost to the retailer. The bill also requires that any safety notification supplied by a cellular telephone manufacturer must have the language of the safety notification plainly visible on the outside of the product package or, if using a label, the label must be plainly visible on the outside of the package. This bill also requires the retailer to provide an information bulletin to the purchaser of a cellular telephone informing the purchaser of potential health risks associated with the use of cellular telephones. A violation of this provision is a violation of the Maine Unfair Trade Practices Act.

The letter in its entirety:

The state of Maine faces potential major liability costs for employees that may be diagnosed with a brain tumor who use cell phones as part of their work. Also, with the pending epidemic of brain cancers and other diseases attributed to wireless radiation, this will have an impact on public health care costs in Maine.

As Goes Maine, So Goes the Nation: Maine Legislature Passes First in the Nation State-Wide Law Requiring Cellphone Makers to Tell the Public About Radio Frequency Radiation

$

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/17/2014 -- By a 2-1 majority, this week the Maine House of Representatives passed the Wireless Information Act sponsored by Representative Andrea Boland. Despite opposition from Maine Attorney General Janet Mills who sided with industry’s argument that the law was unconstitutional, this Act provides that manufacturers must make available to the public legible information regarding exposure to radiofrequency radiation from cell phones. Currently that information is seldom seen by consumers, although it is required in Israel, France, India and many other technologically sophisticated nations.

Supporting the constitutionality of the law, acclaimed Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig, Roy L. Furman professor of Law and Leadership, and Director of Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, framed 0 opposition to the proposed law by the Maine Attorney General as an indication of the powerful role that money plays in politics today.

“To those who say it is unconstitutional,” Lessig said he would help the Legislature protect the right to know about wireless information. Further he noted that should the State decline to defend against any industry legal challenge, he is committed to do so pro bono, all the way to the Supreme Court. His offer was welcomed by Representative Boland who’s been working on this bill since 2010.

Ms. Boland added, “I am deeply grateful to Prof. Lessig and to all those who have worked to see that Mainers have the right to know what’s buried in fine print in phones today. I applaud my colleagues for voting to protect the rights of our citizens to make informed decisions about cell phone safety.”

The Wireless Information Act requires that any manufacturer&aposs information relating to radio-frequency exposure must be plainly visible on the outside of the cell phone&aposs product packaging or the packaging must contain a label with the following warning for all cell phones sold in the state that have manufacturer&aposs safety warnings:

"RF EXPOSURE: To find information relating to radio-frequency exposure, refer to information supplied by the manufacturer" and language directing consumers to the page or pages of the owner&aposs manual or other insert or location where the radio-frequency exposure guidelines or instructions or general information may be found."

Lessig, a constitutional law expert, concludes that the law is constitutionally protected and that arguments to the contrary amount to industry constitute strong-arming of government.

In Lessig’s words, “The State of Maine should have the right to exercise its sovereign authority to protect the citizens of Maine from a risk that the vast majority are completely unaware of -- without fear of bullying by multinational corporations.”

In a San Francisco case last year, the judge upheld the right of local officials to protect public health and safety and directed the City of San Francisco to reword its proposed cell phone fact sheet for retailers to distribute to consumers. In his decision, Judge Alsup said: “Nothing in the federal statutes or FCC regulations bars local disclosure requirements like those now required in San Francisco.”

Ellen K. Marks, with the California Brain Tumor Association and formerly with Environmental Health Trust, Lloyd Morgan and Devra Davis of Environmental Health Trust have worked with a number of groups to support this legislation for the past four years, including Dr. Joel Moskowitz, Director of the University of California, Berkeley Center for Family and Community Health, the American Association for Cell Phone Safety, the Bioiniative Report, Electromagnetic Health and others. The grassroots effort to urge precautionary policies on cell phones is a centerpiece of Davis’ award-winning Nautilus Silver medal winning book, Disconnect—the truth about cell phone radiation.

Maple Grove, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/19/2014 -- Worldlandforms.com, an online portal providing vital information about the landforms around the world, enables its visitors to gather composite volcano information from its site.

Worldlandforms.com lets people know about the various types of landforms on the Earth. Explaining landforms, one of the spokespersons at the organization stated, “A landform is the formation of rock and dirt found on Earth’s surface which can be larger than a continent or smaller than a pond. In geological science, landforms are defined as the features that make up the earth’s surface.”

He continues, “They comprise a geomorphological unit. Oceanic water body interface like oceans, seas, bays, peninsulas, gulfs, etc. are also referred to as landforms. Landforms are grouped by physical characteristic like elevation, slope, orientation, etc. They are also classified by rock exposure, soil type, formation, etc.”

Talking more about landforms, he added, “The highest order of landforms is oceans or continents. They are created by a lot of factors like plate tectonics, erosion, deposition, wind etc. Biological factors sometimes influence them. For example, coral and algae form the coral reef which is a natural process, so coral reefs are also called landforms.”

Some of the examples of landforms included on this site are: bays, spatter cones, waterfalls, archipelagos, mountains, valleys, continents, gulfs, lakes and many more. David Olmstead, a veteran researcher and owner of this portal, frequently posts his written landform blogs and posts on this site. Enthusiasts can also browse through the social media pages available on various social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and many more, to get recent information posted by the online portal.

Handex Industrial Services (HIS) of Handex Consulting & Remediation, LLC (HCR) Awarded Chemical Sludge Dewatering Project Valued at $750,000

Winter Park, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/20/2014 -- Handex Industrial Services (HIS), a division of Handex Consulting & Remediation (HCR), LLC and a leading provider of Sludge Dewatering Services for oil refineries located in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, announced today that it was awarded a chemical sludge dewatering contract for approximately $750,000.

The project is for an environmental engineering and consulting firm conducting hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas from the Marcellus Shale Formation in east central Ohio. HIS employees will work 24 hours per day to reduce the existing sludge inventory for the first month of the contract. HIS anticipates dewatering on site for a total of six months to two years.

Chemical sludge produced by treatment of flowback wastewater, a by-product of hydraulic fracturing, requires dewatering with HCR&aposs mobile low pressure plate and frame filter presses before being trucked off site for disposal. Dewatering minimizes the weight of waste trucked off site by 70%-80% and maximizes the volume of water for recycling, which in turn provides the producer with significant savings.

HIS processes more than 40 million gallons of sludge annually, and is fully equipped and prepared to support ancillary mobile wastewater treatment facilities for hydraulic fracturing operations in the Northeast. HIS is excited to be actively involved in this growing industry that is at the scientific forefront of oil and gas production.

The International Dark-Sky Association Awards Dark Sky Status to Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument

IDA has designated Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument as part of its International Dark Sky Places Program. The new International Dark Sky Place is also known as “Parashant International Night Sky Province.”

Tucson, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/21/2014 -- The remote, wild character of rural northwest Arizona has long drawn dedicated adventurers who value protection of the area’s abundant natural resources. Lately, dark night skies have earned a place among these precious assets worthy of preservation. In recognition of exceptional efforts to this end, the International Dark Sky Association announced today that it has designated Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument as part of its International Dark Sky Places Program. The new International Dark Sky Place is also known as “Parashant International Night Sky Province.” A public event to celebrate the designation will be held April 26 at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah.

“Parashant has outstanding Gold-tier night skies—some of the best in the southwest. Their new designation marks them as an environmental leader in moving to preserve the Monument’s starry skies for generations to come,” said IDA Executive Director Bob Parks.

Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, established in 2000, consists of 1.05 million acres (42,000 ha) of land on the “Arizona Strip,” the portion of Arizona lying north of the Colorado River. The Monument is bounded to the south by the Grand Canyon and on the west by the Arizona-Nevada border. At the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Mojave Desert and Great Basin, it is among the most isolated of the federally managed land units in the contiguous 48 states.

Parashant represents an area of over a million acres with no paved roads, limited structures, four Wilderness areas and pristine night skies. “Solitude and wilderness have always been associated with Parashant and these characteristics exemplify our night skies,” said Eathan McIntyre, Physical Science Specialist at Parashant and leader of the effort to secure an IDA designation

First Such Award for the US Bureau Of Land Management
The National Park Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management manage the administration of Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument jointly. While the NPS counts four other of its properties among IDA International Dark Sky Parks, the IDA recognition of Parashant is a first for lands within the BLM portfolio.

NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis characterized today’s award as the result of a “beautiful partnership” with BLM. He hopes that IDA’s recognition of Parashant will attract other BLM sites on the Colorado Plateau to join in educating communities and protecting night skies. “The night sky is something you can restore. It’s not gone, it’s still there and all we have to do is pay attention to our lighting,” Jarvis said.

A Look At The Past, A Vision Of The Future
The human presence in Parashant extends back as far as the Paleoindians who arrived in the Arizona Strip near the end of the last Ice Age nearly 13,000 years ago. Remnants of formerly extensive Puebloan (Anasazi) and Southern Paiute cultures are found on the Monument. Mining activities, timber cutting, and settlement by farmers and ranchers began by the 1870s and continued into the early twentieth century. Parashant’s extreme remoteness discouraged all but the hardiest of settlers, which helped protect its skies from brightening after the advent of electric lighting.

Members of the Pauite tribes living near Parashant value the unspoiled quality of the Monument lands, including its remarkably dark night skies. In voicing his support for the effort leading to today’s award, Manuel M. Savala, chairperson of the Kaibab Paiute Tribe, explained why dark skies are significant to his constituents. “Any effort that can help conserve our dark night skies and to protect a place where one can clearly look toward the stars and planets will benefit our younger generations, our visitors, and the tribal community at large.”

Dark skies advocates hope to capitalize on today’s announcement and carry the momentum forward toward the protection of additional lands in the region. Interagency cooperation is seen as key to the success of this effort.

“Parashant International Night Sky Province embodies the collaboration between multiple agencies and landowners that will lead to the continued success of the Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative,” said Nathan Ament, Coordinator of the Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative, an NPS-sponsored collaboration dedicated to the preservation of dark night skies on federal lands in the Four Corners area. “It represents NPS and BLM&aposs dedication to leading the way in protecting natural darkness as a precious resource on the Colorado Plateau,” Ament explained.

Parashant joins other IDA Dark Sky Places already designated on the Colorado Plateau, including Flagstaff, AZ; Natural Bridges National Monument, UT; and Chaco Canyon National Historical Park, NM. Efforts are now underway at nearby Grand Canyon National Park to seek a similar IDA designation. Officials at Parashant and the Grand Canyon envision a future in which community partnerships, public education, and voluntary efforts to place sensible controls on outdoor lighting lead to more dark skies conservation along the nearly 300-mile-long Colorado River corridor in northern Arizona.

About the IDA Dark Sky Places Program
IDA established the International Dark Sky Places conservation program in 2001 to recognize excellent stewardship of the night sky. Designations are based on stringent outdoor lighting standards and innovative community outreach. Since the program began, six communities, 16 parks and eight reserves have received International Dark Sky Place designations. Water Contamination Forces Many to Avoid Water Use

Over 300,000 cannot drink or bathe in tap water

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- There was a real concern for the several hundred-thousand individuals who were left without clean water in West Virginia. Water remained unclean for the third day in a row after a chemical spill at a water facility. Executives stated that it could be days before uncontaminated water would be flowing throughout the local pipes once again.

According to experts, the water sample test results must remain consistently exhibiting that chemical&aposs present within the water are below 1-parts per million. Such a level is the recommend level based on the federal agency&aposs own numbers, and is the mark to be held before residents can turn on their taps once again.

The company in charge stated that residents within the nine countries were to not drink the water in their taps. They were also advised not to take baths or wash dishes in the water as well. The reason was that a foaming agent used to process coal had seeped into the Elk River.

300,000 individuals are not forced to only use the water for flushing the toilet. Thirty-two individuals sought medical treatment at hospitals after experiencing nausea and vomiting after ingesting water.

"This incident continues to impact the people of West Virginia - our goal is to find out what happened to allow a leak of such magnitude to occur and to ensure that the proper safeguards are in place to prevent a similar incident from occurring," Chemical Safety Board chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso said in a news release.

According to the company nearly 7,500 gallons “escaped” the storage tank and contaminated the area, according to Micahel Dorsey, who works as Chief of the State Department of Environmental Protection&aposs Homeland Security and Emergency Response.

The actual tally of chemical that made it&aposs way into the river is not known, but officials do not believe waterways downstream will be significantly affected due to dilution.

The company has since issued an apology on its own behalf.

"We&aposd like to start by sincerely apologizing to the people in the affected counties of West Virginia," company President Gary Southern said. "Our friends and our neighbors, this incident is extremely unfortunate, unanticipated and we are very, very sorry for the disruptions to everybody&aposs daily life this incident has caused."

Large Flux in Temperature Causes Broken Water Lines

Icy weather conditions and burst pipes caused flood in the streets of Chicago

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- With the icy weather and frozen conditions that covered Chicago over the weekend, frozen pipes were the likely cause of a sprinkler system bursting. The result of which was damaged businesses and a slippery street that was a hazard to the neighborhood.

A leak within a fire system was said to be the likely cause as the Pulaski Road was covered with water, which then froze. Firefighters had to wade through knee-deep ice-water in order to get to the cause of the leak.

The building&aposs sprinkler system was said to have burst near 11 pm and water was sent pouring into the street, according to the fire authority. Those at the scene were wading in the water in order to get to the genesis of the leak, according to managing deputy commissioner of the Department of Water Management, Bill Bresnahan.

The fire department fixed the leak and used salt spreaders to treat the ice that had forced, according to police. The sprinkler system burst at the Columbia Sportswear as well, according to Bresnahan. Gain, salt-spreaders were used at the scene.

Each of the leaks was said to have been caused by the severity of the icy weather. The National Weather Service had reported that temperatures fell to 6 below zero within the Chicago area that night.

Currently, there is no tally of the damage done to either business due to the flooding.

Minnesota Deals with Water Main Breaks

Dozens of busted pipes keep restoration crews busy

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/24/2014 -- While the experience of a slight warm-up in the Minnesota area was a welcome experience for many, it also came with a price. Certainly the above-zero temperatures was a positive sight for many, but the escape from the deep freeze also brought bursting water main pipes across the area.

When temperatures reached over 30 degrees from the previous negative-20, the fluctuation caused pipes to burst quite easily. Experts on the issue noted that the extremely low temperatures drove frost deep into the pipes, causing them to shift out of position. This put pressure on the now elderly water lines. The freezing also caused cracks in the pipes, which then allowed water to flow from them once water began to thaw.

“It’s just kind of inevitable,” said Josh Werner of Valley-Rich Co., the company that repaired a break Saturday in Wayzata.

The unfortunate break had hundreds detoured as there was a 7-hour cleanup necessary along Lake Minnetonka. Crews worked to fix cracked iron pipe sections and connected a water main onto another roadway.

It’s been a real busy last 10 days,” said Mike Olmstead, who is the Hennepin County senior engineer technician.

The city and its crews scrambled all week to fix pipes across the metro area. Burst pipes forced continual headaches for official and maintenance crews. Restoration workers dealt with the flooding at River Park Lofts and have been called dozens of homes and businesses.

“Over the last week, it’s just been crazy,” manager Richard Larson said. “Once it starts warming up, it gets busy. We’ve had crews basically working 24 hours a day.”

More breaks were noted in Wayzata, again thanks to the fluctuating temperatures. The area is now looking to undergo reconstruction at a larger scale than simple replacement as the stretch appears to be in intensive need. The most recent break left 12 homes without water for hours, but thankfully damaged no homes.
