What's the Difference Between a Roll-off Container and a Dumpster

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/18/2012 -- If you own a new home or apartment complex, or if you are opening a new business, you have a lot of decisions to make. Owning property comes with many responsibilities and bills. Making sure you understand those responsibilities typically means you&aposll understand the bills, since one generally follows the other. Although utilities like heat, water, power, and gas are often at the top of the list when thinking about brick-and-mortar costs for home of business, it&aposs just as important to think about your long-term and short-term garbage disposal needs.

Waste disposal is serious business if you’re located in an urban area. Making sure that you have a clean and healthy-looking property is important as a home or business owner. Nobody wants neighbors calling to comment on the condition of their property if trash is left hung up in the landscaping and no business wants to appear dirty on the outside or customers may not bother coming inside. The first step to proper garbage disposal is determining what type of garbage you need to get rid of.

For those who own residential property a few trash cans or a dumpster is the best bet. These canisters provide permanent onsite storage for garbage while it is waiting to get picked up and taken to the landfill. Dumpsters are great for small to medium apartment complexes. They can hold a lot of garbage and can accommodate a variety of building sizes by altering when the pickup of the trash occurs. If the residents are few, the trash pickup could happen as infrequently as once per week. If the residents are tossing out a lot of trash on a daily basis, then daily garbage pickup can be arranged. A good combination of dumpster size and pickup schedule works together to ensure that you are getting your money’s worth for the service.

Dumpsters of even the largest size, however, are not suitable for every situation. In cases where a construction company is working or construction waste is being handled in large quantities, a roll-off container is the most cost-effective way to store and collect debris. These large containers come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 10 to 30 cubic yards. Because they are larger, they need to have a bigger space to sit while they are being filled. As with the dumpsters, you can regulate the frequency of pickup to modify the services to fit your business and needs.

Regardless of if you use a dumpster or a roll-off container, there are some materials that are not allowed. Asbestos and construction materials that contain asbestos are not allowed in on-site containers. The same goes for liquids that contain hazardous chemicals like paint and other solvents. Instead, these materials need specials treatment. You can call your local waste disposal company for more details.

EnviroSolutions Inc. has many years of helping residential clients and small business owners find the perfect on-site canister to fit their needs. Serving the Baltimore, Virginia, Maryland and DC areas, ESI can work with you to schedule waste disposal services that meet your financial budget, while working to preserve the surrounding natural landscape we all call home. Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/18/2012 -- Today, it is easy for all of us to think about something simply going “away” when it is thrown in the garbage. But when a piece of trash is thrown away in Virginia, DC, or Maryland, where does it actually go? Today, more than half of the waste that is created by Americans goes to a landfill. The system of landfills in America is one that is very complex, with numerous guidelines at both the state and federal level. These guidelines ensure that the hundreds of millions of tons of municipal waste that are generated in the United States each year are handled safely and efficiently, and in a way that protects our communities and our environment. They help to create and manage a practical system for handling the country’s waste by:

- Encouraging source reduction and recycling to maximize landfill life.
- Specifying safe design and management practices that will prevent the release of contaminants into ground water.
- Specifying operating practices that will protect human health.
- Protecting future generations by requiring careful closure procedures, including monitoring of landfill conditions and the effects of landfills on the surrounding environment (as stated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency).

At ESI, we understand each community’s needs and concerns when it comes to garbage disposal. Our landfills fully meet or exceed federal regulatory guidelines, and we provide multiple landfill locations to serve communities, including those within DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Lorton Landfill in Lorton, Virginia- This landfill is a construction and demolition landfill. Located in Lorton, VA, this landfill provides construction and demolition landfill services to Northern VA, Washington DC, and Maryland, and also provides recycling services for the area.

Big Run Landfill in Ashland, Kentucky- Big Run Landfill provides disposal services for municipal solid waste, construction and demolition, auto shred residue, soil, industrial waste, filter cake, and process sludge to local businesses and residents. While most of our business is local, we also provide long haul truck and rail waste stream services to this landfill. Our trains can carry more than 280 truckloads worth of waste, and are an environmentally-friendly solution: A single gallon of diesel in one of our trains can move one ton of waste over 400 miles!

Copper Ridge Landfill- This municipal solid waste landfill is located in Caples, West Virginia, which is 60 miles south of Charleston, WV. It provides service to local businesses and residents, including those in Virginia. Long haul services similar to those at the Big Run Landfill are offered, and we also accept construction and demolition waste, auto shred residue, soil, industrial waste, filter cake and process sludge at this location.

While federal and state guidelines exist to ensure the environmental safety of every landfill in the nation, private citizens and businesses have a responsibility, too. Each person should choose and support a landfill company that wholly complies with all regulations. EnviroSolutions, Inc, proudly acts in accordance with all federal and state landfill guidelines, offering a comprehensive and effective solution for waste transfer, hauling, processing, and disposal. Visit ESIWaste.com today for a complete list of our services and service stations and to learn more about why we are “The Answer to Waste.”

Tips for Hiring a Waste Management Company

$
0
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/18/2012 -- Many folks around the world have the opinion that garbage is garbage, and the less they have to think about it the better. After all, the process of waste management is simple. On a given day we haul our cans to the curb, filled with a week’s worth of debris, and when we come back at the end of the day the cans are empty and we start to fill them again in preparation for the next week’s pick-up. However, not taking the time to understand all that your waste management company provides, or understanding what their goals and environmental concerns are, is a missed opportunity to better your community.

In Virginia and Maryland, EnviroSolutions Inc. wants you to demand a quality of service that not only takes care of your personal needs but the needs of your community as well. In order to find that organization, you need to ensure that your waste management company has a diversity of services and an environmental record that considers the welfare of the community they serve. Here are two items to consider when hiring a waste management company.

Diversity of Services: When it comes to waste disposal, one size does not fit all. Too often, disposal companies treat all their customers the same, even though the needs of an individual homeowner are much different than the needs of a small business or apartment complex. Make sure that the company you hire offers a variety of dumpster sizes as well as a pick-up schedule that maximizes your dollars. Otherwise, you may be paying for your provider to come on a day when the cans are still empty or even worse, come days after they have been full.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: Minimizing the amount of debris and trash that enters a landfill has long been a simple, yet productive route to reducing the land used for waste storage. All around the country new, green technologies and businesses are blazing trails and pushing the reuse of waste to new levels. Reuse stores that capture and preserve housing materials for use in remodels and new construction divert waste from the construction trades in numbers never before seen. Plastics, metals and fabrics are finding new uses as well in second hand business shops that up-cycle materials into new, saleable items. In Maryland and Virginia, recycling is a way to preserve the natural flora and fauna. Ensure that your waste disposal company is doing all they can to preserve our rich heritage into the future.

Specialized services and a commitment to the environment: These are the qualities of a waste management company that deserves your business. In an ever-changing and growing world, with new demands on our infrastructure and new technologies to reduce those demands, you want a company that doesn’t just make your trash disappear, but one that disposes of it with forethought. A company that plans for the future of the community in which it works and strives to ensure that future is bright. EnviroSolutions, Inc. works hard every day to be that company. Call us today for more information.

Why Waste Management Companies Are Environmentally Friendly

$
0
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/24/2012 -- It has taken people a relatively long time to understand the benefits of living an environmentally friendly life. And, although much of the planet agrees that the Earth is more than just a place to build cities, we still have a long way to go before we begin to reverse the cycle of harm that has been levied against our tiny planet.

Surprisingly enough, however, it has been waste management companies like EnviroSolutions, Inc. – serving Virgina and Maryland – that have been leading the way in environmentally friendly efforts to reduce the damage to our planet. This is because EnviroSolutions Inc. (ESI) cares about the planet and the health of all living creatures. Look deep into their philosophy and you will find that their investment in green technologies is one part altruism and one part good, common business sense.

The altruistic reasons are many. With a vastly growing population, the need for better waste management technologies is on the rise. Product packaging and individual portions have increased the amount of waste headed for the landfill over the last several decades. Cheaper products and more disposable income create a larger demand for those products – many of which have a built-in obsolescence. Whereas decades before products were built to last, now products are built to be tossed aside, un-repairable and garbage-bound just a few short years after their creation.

Without proper technologies for reuse and recycling, these products, by the millions, would clog the landfills quickly. New territories and space would be needed to house all the garbage and debris, eating up urban and suburban landscape, displacing wildlife and creating ecological instabilities. The more space we need for garbage, the less we have to live.

The owners and workers of ESI and other waste management companies understand that how they treat the environment affects their families just as much as your family. They also understand that reducing the amount of waste that heads into the landfill saves them money in the long run.

Buying land to convert into a landfill costs money, as does buying new trucks to haul more and more waste. And paying people to drive those trucks and develop those landfills has a cost as well. The fact is that the more waste that gets moved into landfills, the higher the cost to waste management companies. Only by finding ways to divert trash from the landfill, utilizing cutting edge, green technologies under the motto of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” can waste management companies balance the growth of their business while maintaining the services their customers demand.

The world’s population is ever-growing and the demands we put on our waste disposal services grows along with it. However, in Virginia and Maryland, we have companies like EnviroSolutions Inc. researching and implementing new technologies and systems to ensure that we waste as little as possible. Recycling isn’t just a fashion or a sales point for businesses: It’s a commitment we have to the environment, our customers, our business and ourselves.

What Is a Landfill, and Where Are There Landfills in Virginia and Maryland

$
0
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/24/2012 -- Contrary to popular belief, the environment is a constant topic of conversation among waste disposal professionals. The truth is that waste disposal companies are typically on the forefront of championing recycling efforts, energy conservation and common sense when it comes to generating trash. This is because companies like EnviroSolutions Inc. are the people who are responsible for finding a place for all of the garbage that is set out on the curb. It’s our job to worry about the space needed (and left) to store all that trash.

Although many people don’t bother to think about it, all of that garbage you bag up and toss outside has to go somewhere, and so does your neighbors garbage as well. With tens of thousands of people all contributing multiple bags of refuse on a weekly basis, where could it all possibly fit? Well, it fits in the ground, at a landfill, probably not too far from where you live.

A landfill is a large section of land that is typically in the countryside or away from large residential areas, although some have been caught up in and around development as cities have sprawled out from their urban center. These landfills are comprised of cells, or large holes, that are dug into the earth. These cells are then filled with trash from nearby town residents and businesses. When the hole is filled to the brim, the cell is covered with dirt and made to look like regular land in the country.

However, a landfill is more than just a hole in the ground where garbage can be dumped. All landfills are monitored and regulated by state and federal regulatory guidelines. These laws ensure that the landfill maintains a balance with the environment. Ratios of garbage to dirt, the size of cells and how those cells are treated (typically some plastic barrier is laid in the hole before garbage is placed within) are all regulated by state, local and federal government to ensure that there isn&apost damage to the environment and ground water. In fact, landfills have very strict rules regarding the disposal of products and substances that are hazardous to the environment as well as the health of nearby residents.

ESI has three landfills that serve the Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, DC and West Virginia areas. The Lorton landfill (located in Lorton, Virginia) is a landfill set aside mostly for construction and demolition debris. The two other landfills are the Copper Ridge Landfill, located in Welch, West Virginia, and the Big Run Landfill, located in Ashland, Kentucky. These landfills serve local residents with all their general waste disposal needs. So, regardless of your disposal needs, ESI can help.

EnviroSolution, Inc. has a track record that speaks volumes about our determination to improve and protect the environment as well as our commitment to help businesses of all sizes succeed. Rest assured that if we take care of your trash, we are taking care of your town and the natural surroundings for generations to come. Let us take care of your waste disposal needs. What Services Does ESI Waste Offer

$
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/24/2012 -- Like most states, Maryland and Virginia have waste disposal needs that require careful consideration and the use of tested, technologically-advanced systems in order to protect residents and the environment. EnviroSolutions Inc. (ESI) is a company that has grown in response to those needs. Started in 2003, ESI provides an array of disposal services to meet the diverse needs of businesses and private residences around the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Growing from a commitment to the ecological safety of the communities in which we work and a dedication to service, ESI has become a valued partner in a wide variety of waste disposal services.

Commercial Waste Removal and Recycling needs vary from business to business with no one-size-fits all solution. This is why ESI offers an array of containers and service schedules. Our dumpster rental services allow you to choose from a variety of container sizes along with pick-up schedules to suit your businesses needs, which allows you to keep your waste disposal costs to a minimum. As the needs of your business change, so will your waste removal needs. ESI can grow and expand with you along the way, ensuring that your disposal is happening appropriately and affordably.

For larger businesses and housing developments that see a great deal of trash on a daily basis, waste can stack up quickly and a regular dumpster rental may not be enough. In these cases, EnviroSolutions Inc. offers compactors. These high-volume containers crush waste down to a manageable size. This will reduce the number of waste pick-ups needed and save money.

Specialized compactors are able to handle dry waste (ex. apartment buildings and retail stores) or wet waste (ex. hotels and hospitals or other industries with lots of food waste and other wet materials). A few quick questions from our trained staff will help us understand your needs and get you the proper equipment.

Disposal transfer stations located around Maryland and Virginia are strategically located to make sure that our customers don’t have far to travel to dispose of their waste. These transfer stations provide a centralized location to effectively sort trash, routing it to its final destination to be discarded for good, or used again in another form.

Because ESI has a commitment to the environment, we take recycling seriously. Our commitment to use landfills efficiently has led us to design a state-of-the-art landfill and use cutting-edge landfill practices. As partners with the communities we work in and around, we ensure that materials that go into our landfills are materials that cannot be recycled in that community. In addition, many of our landfill sites exceed the minimum standards required by the federal government.

Waste disposal is a necessary component of our everyday lives. Without proper waste management rules in place and competent companies following those rules, the landscapes of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States would look much different than they do now. ESI is proud to be a part of a progressive solution to waste management, ensuring that the future of the communities we operate in is one that is free of debris and full of promise.

When Should Someone Consider a Roll-off Container

$
0
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/24/2012 -- People who start businesses work hard at drafting business plans, crunching numbers and determining their market. They dream big, look for cost-savings, and take the time to poll their customers to ensure that they are providing a product or service that has high quality, is affordable, and, at the end of the day, makes money. But, regardless of what kind of business a person starts, one thing is almost always forgotten: How they plan to get rid of garbage.

The fact is that every business produces garbage of some kind. Getting rid of that garbage is as easy as calling up a local commercial waste and recycling company like EnviroSolutions, Inc., to schedule pickup. But, determining what kind of services best suit your business and amount of trash that you generate can sometimes be confusing.

Too often, businesses start off by having a few small trash cans. From there they transition into a small dumpster, which can serve the needs of a growing business for a long period by varying the amount of times the trash is picked up throughout the week. When the business is smaller, the trash is only picked up once or twice a week. As the business grows, the trash pickup can move to every day to ensure that there is room for the next day. But in many cases, businesses can grow out of their dumpster, even with daily pickup. In these cases, it&aposs time to get a roll-off container.

A roll-off container works well for businesses that have very large amounts of waste on a weekly basis. If you are a business owner that finds yourself staring at an alley filled with more trash than your dumpster, then you know that it&aposs time to upgrade to a roll-off container.

Like trash cans and dumpsters, roll-off containers come in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. The smallest container offered by ESI is 10 cubic yards in volume, and is 4 feet high, 8 feet wide and 13 feet long. Compare this to our largest dumpster, an 8-cubic-yard-volume unit, and you can see how smooth a transition from dumpsters to roll-off containers can be. Roll-off containers are perfect for operations that require a bit more capacity and also businesses that need the ability to throw away larger items like construction waste, furniture and other large items.

The roll-off containers also come in 20 yard and 30 yard sizes. These containers are perfect for large corporate offices and construction companies that have a great need for trash removal on a large scale. It is important to note however, that regardless of how large the container is, there are certain materials that are not allowed to be thrown in the landfill. Asbestos, batteries, hazardous waste of any kind, liquids, paints, medical waste, and tires are all items that must be disposed of properly at your local waste disposal company.

EnviroSolutions Inc. has been serving clients and businesses in Virginia, Maryland, DC and Baltimore for years. We have a deep understanding of what proper garbage disposal means to a successful business. We work hard to ensure that our practices preserve the natural environment of the area we all live and work in, while keeping our clients streets and doorsteps clean and ready for the new day. Visit ESIWaste.com today for more information about roll-off containers.

Dumpster Rentals for Home Improvement

$

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/29/2012 -- Anyone who has renovated their home knows that the amount of time, money, and sweat that goes into the finished product is never predictable. More often than not, renovations include trip after trip to the local dumpster, loading and un-loading the truck again and again. People who live in rural areas and don’t have the same convenient access to garbage collection facilities as those in urban areas should work to take advantage of services like those provided by ESI Waste.

Companies like ESI Waste & EnviroSolutions make it easier than ever to bring the mountain to the molehill. Rather than transporting old flooring, windows, and roofing materials into town, an on-site dumpster simplifies the whole process. ESI Waste operates in the Maryland, DC, Baltimore and Virginia areas, and the variety of dumpsters available makes it pretty likely that you can find a service that matches the needs of your home renovation project.

The logistics of dumpster rentals can be a little complicated, depending on the size of your residence. Companies like ESI Waste offer huge dumpsters as well as smaller, more compact models. Talking with a company representative can help guide you through the process of choosing a dumpster size. Smaller dumpsters can probably fit in your driveway, and that makes the trips out to the dumpster extremely convenient. If your project is a big one, however, and the dumpster size increases accordingly, you may have to keep the dumpster rental in the street, yard, or elsewhere on your property. While these locations might increase the distance that you have to travel to dispose of home renovation remnants, it will still be a much more efficient and infinitely easier process than continuously driving to the neighborhood dump.

Home-focused construction projects that involve tearing out flooring, windows, and drywall and then replacing them generate massive amounts of waste, and it can be hard to properly dispose of everything without slowing down your work. These projects don’t just involve drywall and flooring, they often involve disposing of large, bulky furniture and equipment that won’t fit into your new design scheme. The most efficient thing you can do is to contain it all in once space and dispose of it later. In this way, the use of a dumpster speeds up your work tremendously, as you can clear out the house without making trips to the local dump at every turn.

These dumpster rentals are also perfect for large landscaping projects. If you’re a contractor conducting a massive overhaul on someone’s land, a dumpster rental might be the most efficient way to dispose of trees, bushes, mulch, pots, and other landscape features. That goes for home owners as well. Ripping up all of your current landscaping seems like a big project, but it can become even more difficult, as many cities don’t allow for the disposal of shrubs, trees, and bushes in city dumpsters. Private dumpster rental ensures that you won’t have to go hunting for the nearest landfill or compost station.

While ESI Waste would be happy to accept carload after carload of waste at our Baltimore, MD location, we understand the burden that this can have after repeated runs, both on yourself and your vehicle. This is why we rent dumpsters: To offer a cost-effective and time-efficient way for you to handle big projects around your home or business. Visit ESIWaste.com today for more information.

Disposing of Tree Branches in Northern VA

$

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/30/2012 -- Fall has arrived in DC, Maryland and Virginia, and homeowners and renters everywhere are preparing their homes and yards for the winter ahead. A focus for many has been disposing of leaves, but many late summer storms also have knocked down a significant number of tree branches for those living in the area. Unsure of what to do with branches once they&aposve hit the ground?

Keep your yard clean and get it ready for winter by disposing of those tree branches. ESI Waste has unique waste solutions to help you manage your trash. ESI Waste is a cornerstone for waste removal and management throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. There are many ways to reuse or recycle those fallen tree branches, some of which are covered below. Cleaning up your yard allows you to repurpose the wood.

If you have a fireplace in your house, certain wood can be dried and used in those fireplaces or wood burning stoves as long as local laws support this. Leaf waste can be reused as mulch or composting too, so you may be able to make use of most of the yard waste. Unfortunately, many cities do not collect what is considered "green" waste, so repurposing this wood might require hiring someone with a tree grinder or stump chipper. If you have significant amounts of green waste, this can be an effective way to eliminate those trees and branches immediately.

Your local community or public works department may also operate a yard-waste reclamation facility in your area or sponsor a monthly "yard waste" collection alongside trash disposal. If a facility is near you, you might incur the cost for renting a truck and be responsible for a tip, so check whether your municipality will collect yard waste for free at some point. This optimal solution saves you time and money, so it&aposs worth investigating.

If you have a fallen tree on your property, local landscaping services or firewood suppliers may be interested in taking your word for their businesses. There are two upsides to this process: the wood and/or trees are removed from your property quickly and it&aposs likely that these services are either free or performed for only a small fee.

If you&aposre disposing of tree branches along with de-cluttering your home, consider dumpster rental. ESI offers dumpster rental for Baltimore and other areas throughout Maryland, DC, and Virginia, so check out their options for your waste removal. You won&apost have to worry about making multiple trips with trash cans or driving to the dump, and you&aposll be able to get rid of large amounts of trash at one time. This is great for families that are preparing to move, too. You&aposll rid your house of things you no longer need, and take care of the need to do so quickly.

There are many options for disposal of your tree branches in the DC region. Investigate your options for repurposing or recycling the wood and contact ESI with any questions about your special needs for waste removal. Visit ESIWaste.com today for more information.

ESI Waste Explains the Importance of Recycling

$
0
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/30/2012 -- Although the process of recycling may seem like a modern idea, it is actually a concept that dates back thousands of years. Before the emergence of the industrial age, it was common for humans to simply reuse an item over and over again until it could no longer serve its purpose. However, as disposables grew increasingly common, the need for a modern recycling program emerged.

The concept of recycling and conservation in America became important in the 1930s and 1940s, when economic depression hit, and many people simply could not afford to buy new household items. Additionally, goods such as metal, nylon, and rubber were rationed during World War II, so recycling helped to support the war effort. As awareness of environmental issues grew in the 1960s and 1970s, recycling became a mainstream practice.

In the year 1960, each person in the United States generated 2.68 pounds of waste. In the year 2000, this rose all the way to 4.65 pounds of waste. However, as we have become a more wasteful society, we have also become one that recycles more of this waste. Between 1980 and 2005, the amount of our waste that was recycled grew from 9.6 percent to 32 percent.

Today, the importance of recycling is widely recognized throughout the United States. In fact, it is currently likely that more people recycle in the U.S. than vote, and many areas have recycling rules and/or laws. In Washington, D.C., recycling is required by law in all commercial establishments, including residential buildings with four or more apartments, colleges, and churches. The Maryland Recycling Act (MRA) requires Baltimore City and all Maryland counties to recycle 15% to 20% (depending on population) of their total waste. Virginia has a law that requires electronics manufacturers and sellers to have recycling plans in place for their customers. As one can see by the recent implementation of these laws, recycling is recognized as a crucial component of minimizing the amount of a region’s space that is used for landfills, reducing litter, and preventing the amount of toxins such as nickel, cadmium, CRTs, mercury, and flame retardants that end up leaching from plastics, batteries, and electronics into the environment.

Recycling is an integral component of preserving our valuable natural resources and preserving our water, air, and land. In 2006, the recycling rate of 32.5 percent saved the carbon emission equivalent of taking 39.4 million cars off the road, or 222.1 million barrels of oil. If we continue to increase our recycling efforts, we can continue to vastly improve our energy conservation. In fact, if we all recycled all of our aluminum cans for just one year, we could save enough energy to light all of Washington, D.C. for 3.7 years, according to one study. Furthermore, it is important to recycle in the DC, MD, and VA areas in order to be in compliance with local laws. For more information about convenient recycling services in your area, please contact EnviroSolutions, Inc, or visit ESIWaste.com.

How Landfills Benefit Society

$

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/30/2012 -- When people think about landfills, the mind doesn’t paint an appealing picture. However, while landfills aren’t aesthetically pleasing, there are numerous benefits to landfills, many of them environmental.

Before we implemented landfill operations, the government had no way of monitoring waste disposal. Not only were companies and individuals dumping waste wherever they pleased, they were doing so with little regard for personal safety. In addition, areas often chose to export their waste to landfills outside of their boundaries in order to minimize the impact on the community. Unfortunately, the energy that gets consumed in order to transport that waste is a huge loss for our energy sources, and increased government monitoring of landfills has made this practice a lot less prevalent, saving energy each and every year.

As you can probably imagine, there are a plethora of health and safety risks involved with disposing of all of the non-recyclable waste in any given area. Landfill staff members are highly trained individuals equipped to deal with the type of organic and potentially dangerous waste that needs to be disposed. Citizens without explicit safety training are certainly unequipped to deal with disposal of medical waste, or waste from the energy industry. Only trained staff at landfills can adequately deal with these challenges. Things as simple as sharp objects and as complex as unexpected chemical interactions pose a risk to anyone working at a landfill, and it is important to keep this risk from affecting the general population.

When landfills are properly managed and landfill sites chosen carefully, staff members can minimize the environmental impact of waste as it degrades. Decomposing material sometimes releases dangerous chemicals into the surrounding area. As much of the waste at landfills is pressed into the ground, this could have a pretty stark impact on our water supply if it wasn’t properly handled by landfill staff.

Landfills save the energy that would be used to export waste, but surprisingly landfills also serve as an additional source of energy. Landfills in the Northeast- think Virginia, DC, Baltimore, and Maryland- work to turn the stagnant waste in landfills into useable energy. Companies like ESI Waste in the Northeast approach the question of disposing of our collective waste in an environmentally responsible way, from dumpsters to processing facilities. Efforts like these are perfect for landfills that produce energy. A combination of processes called waste-to-energy (WTE) includes combustion, gasification, anaerobic digestion, and landfill gas recovery. Workers turn non-recyclable waste into about 2,720 megawatts of power every year. During a time when we are struggling to establish energy independence, every little bit counts.

As one might imagine, trash can&apost be added to a landfill endlessly. Eventually, landfills reach a saturation point and can no longer accept new waste. When that happens, landfills undergo a process that makes the land usable again. Many former landfills are turned into public parks or farmland once they reach that point, and serve the community in a new way. ESI Waste Offers Tips on Cleaning Up After a Hurricane

$

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/30/2012 -- Hurricane Sandy made headlines over the weekend, being dubbed “Frankenstorm” by the media due to its close proximity to Halloween and the strange landfall location. It has been described by many as both a hurricane and a nor’easter, but the truth is that this storm is a combination of different factors. A full moon means higher tides, potentially being whipped up into massive waves by the wind of the hurricane. At the same time, a cold front and an arctic wind are poised to intercept and combine with the hurricane, potentially leading to a combination hurricane and blizzard.

With winds of up to 50 miles per hour and gusts exceeding 75 miles per hour according to one source, damage could be extensive along the east coast with the strongest winds affecting the Northern Virginia to Massachusetts region of New England. West Virginia has already seen snowfall in excess of two feet. With such a potentially damaging storm already on us, you may be wondering what to do in the aftermath, after the storm passes through. ESI Waste provides the following tips:

- Assess the Damage: Depending on your homeowners’ insurance policy, your first step may be to determine the extent of damage which has occurred on your property. Determining what cleanup is necessary could allow you to file a claim on your insurance for repairs to your home. Likewise, auto insurance policies sometimes cover damage from natural events such as hurricanes. The money saved by filing these claims allows you to be better equipped to clean up the damage around your home.
- Consider a Professional Cleanup Crew: Depending on your career, you may not have time to clean up from the storm on your own. As such, a professional cleanup crew may be a good option if you have the resources to hire them. Such a crew will take care of not only the labor around your yard, but the proper disposal of all of the debris.
- Rent a Dumpster or Roll-Off Container: A dumpster or roll-off container can be rented for your property, and will be delivered by the waste management company it is rented from. These containers vary widely in size, with the smallest roll-off container being larger than the largest dumpster offered in most cases. An assessment of the debris on your property should give you a good idea of the space that you will need, as well as how many times the waste company should empty the container before removing it from your property. Generally, the debris caused by a major storm is significant enough that a roll-off container is often necessary to remove large items, such as fallen trees, from your property.

After a storm like Hurricane Sandy, there may not be damage, but there will most certainly be debris. As such, it is often best to schedule your container drop-off before the storm hits. This allows you to receive timely delivery despite the downtime which will have occurred due to the storm. A dumpster or roll-off container rental offers the most cost-effective solution for cleaning up your property and getting things back to normal. ESI Waste Explains Benefits of Dumpster Rental

$
0
0

Manassas, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/01/2012 -- Few people think about renting a dumpster on a day-to-day basis. Most simply place their trash into a designated receptacle, wheel it out to the curb once a week, and watch as a city truck hauls it away. However, those who live outside of city municipal limits in Virginia no longer have weekly trash removal services provided to them, making dumpster rental an option for weekly trash. A bathroom or other room remodel can also necessitate a dumpster rental, in order to store the large amount of waste such as old plumbing fixtures, linoleum and chunks of drywall. These are a few obvious reasons to rent a dumpster, and there are plenty of other great reasons to take advantage of a dumpster rental service, too. ESI Waste offers a short list of suggestions.

Construction Site Waste

Contractors and developers in Maryland or Virginia need a convenient and reliable way to remove waste from their job site. EnviroSolutions, Inc. can handle commercial waste at any capacity, whether a two yard, four yard, six yard, or eight yard dumpster is needed.

Special Events

A frequent problem at events such as fundraisers and festivals is that there are not enough trash receptacles present. This leads to mess and litter, as garbage blows out of overflowing trash cans and into surrounding natural habitats and waterways. A large dumpster is a must for a special event in order to accommodate a crowd.

Small Businesses

Piled-up debris, such as papers and cardboard boxes, can not only be distracting but also dangerous. It is an excellent idea for small businesses to utilize a dumpster rental service to not just keep the workplace tidy, but also help to prevent injuries and worker’s compensation claims.

Home Projects and Renovation

Those completing a home renovation such as an addition or a remodel, or even an outdoor project such as the removal of tree stumps or sod have the potential for a very large amount of waste to be created. It can be an enormous waste of time to haul this trash to an off-site location. Renting a dumpster can save time and make cleanup easier.

Moving Day

Since moving requires you to sort through all of your belongings, it is the perfect time to do some downsizing and get rid of old items that do not need to make the move. Dumpster rental can accommodate large items such as old bookshelves, exercise equipment, playground sets, tables, doors, couches, and rugs.

Dumpster rental is a convenient service that is appropriate for many different reasons and needs. For more details about efficient and expedient dumpster rental in Virginia and Maryland, please contact ESI today.

New Zealand Surveyors to Talk About Industry Partnerships

Technology Spurs Change in Profession

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/02/2012 -- The main topic of conversation during the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors annual conference October 25-28 in Invercargill will be how to fold the growing number of GIS professionals into the 124-year-old organization.

The conference will make clear how drastically the profession has changed with technology, said Southland surveyor and conference convenor Don Moir. These days there are are several thousand GIS operators in the country, while surveyors number fewer than 1000, said Moir.

Unlike surveyors who continue to use more conventional tools in their work, GIS operators incorporate digital information such as satellite photographs into maps. The role attracts surveyors, as well as others whose qualifications do not fit within the confines of the institute.

“What we&aposre finding is that there is a big body of practitioners building up in that area and they don&apost have anybody to represent them," said Moir.

New technology has infiltrated all aspects of the surveying profession, said Moir. The country’s land information system is nearly all computerized. Surveyors file reports and other information to Land Information New Zealand through what is known as the Land Online system, he added.

"Even your basic theodolite is fully electronic now. I doubt anyone makes an optical one." When Moir began working, surveyors used measuring tapes, mechanical adding machines and log tables to make calculations. Today they use computers to send information to their offices wirelessly as they gather it.

One of the conference talking points will be industry partnerships. Those in the institute predict this will be increasingly valuable in coming years as a means of maximizing new developments and opportunities within the profession.

The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors offers a wide range of professional services for its members, including continuing education, research and development, and awarding excellence to those within the industry.

Eco-Housing on the Horizon Due to Rising Green Trend

Olympic Village housing ahead of the curve as new earth-friendly homes become norm

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/02/2012 -- he carbon-free house is on the horizon. The new age of housing will be close by the year 2016, when a new generation of low-carbon houses will find their way onto the market. Pioneers will fit themselves with prototypes, techniques for cost and carbon reduction, and dream up new ways to improve current green technology.

Buyers of new houses are already seeing advantages to the archaic property types, as they are more energy efficient and sometimes come equipped with green essentials.

The average individual is now more energy conscious than the counterparts of years past. On television, Dick Strawbridge, the “eco engineer” presenter, lived out his green dream for everyone to see. Kevin McCloud has turned to rabbit-skins on the floor and a jet engine hot tub. However, developers of new housing have been considering endeavors that are more sophisticated when it comes to eco-awareness.

SmarNewHomes.com research has shown an upturn in interest for energy saving, as 82% of buyers actively seek housing and appliances within the home that are eco-friendly. In 2005, 80% of individuals said they did not even consider energy saving when it came to looking for the right home.

Despite this turn to interest, Code 4 and 5 homes (those specified as low-carbon houses) are still rare. This is due to developers being hit hard in the recession, which caused them to pull back and save on building expenses.

There is one smaller developer, Zero C, run by Kim Slowe, which is making the low-carbon house work. Slowe was instrumental in the Olympic Village at Weymouth’s heating system that runs on biomass, as well as it wood pellet stoves, rainwater harvesting, and super insulation. That area has been renamed Officers field following the Olympics, and is selling for $217,000 for a one-bedroom to $820,000 for a five-bedroom house.

Officers field is built to Code 4 specifications, meaning it is 25% more energy efficient. Those specifications are just a bit ahead of the curve, as houses will be mandated to build to those specifications next year. By 2016, all houses must be to Code 6, or “zero-carbon”.

Tasmania Company and Environmental Groups Clash over Proposed Agreement

Company jobs hang in the balance over possible long-term dispute

San Francisco, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/02/2012 -- Tasmania’s largest surviving timber processor is now in doubt after the state’s marathon forest peace talks collapsed over the weekend.

The Malaysian-owned veneer producer Ta Ann Tasmania is under renewed attacks regarding its export market, which has reignited a campaign that is already so highly divisive in the island, as needs for jobs continues to rise.

Industry leader Terry Edwards stated that the market campaign posed a reprehensible risk to the Ta Ann company’s future. “"The environment groups are promising to destroy Ta Ann&aposs markets,"

Mr. Edwards, chief executive of the Forest Industries Association of Tasmania, told Fairfax. "They intend to injure their reputation as a company internationally."

Options are being reviewed by Ta Ann, and the company plans to examine operations of two mills that employ more than 100 people. Markets for Change, a national group, stated that global customers were turning away from products that resulted in subsequent destruction of threatened forests such as Tasmania.

"Markets for Change has no choice but to continue with its market campaign given the lack of agreement to protect Tasmania&aposs world-class forests," chief executive Tim Birch said.

Peace talks were nearly derailed early in the year when Ta Ann said a cyber campaign cost half of its sales to Japanese customers.

This time around, Ta Ann maintained its inter-government backing agreement between Tasmania and Federal governments that currently underpin talks, suggesting partial solution that might be salvaged.

The Wilderness Society and Environment Tasmania, an Australian Conservation foundation, declared that more than two years of talks with the industry had collapsed after two years of negotiations.

The WS negotiator, Vica Bayley, stated the breaking point came when the industry refused to allow saw log quotas to be removed, and wanted redistributed quotas.

"This is incredibly disappointing and incredibly frustrating," Mr Bayley said. There was an agreement there for the taking."

The original bid earmarked 572,000 hectares of high-conservation-value forest, which was then reduced by 50,000, according to environment groups.

Environment Minister Tony Burk stated that the package would have to be wound back, and Burke appears deeply pessimistic regarding a possible agreement being reached.

"Now people have to look down the barrel of being without an agreement," Mr. Burke said. "Let market forces run their course without a higher level of support than was on the table."

Tasmanian deputy premier Bryan Green said: "There&aposs no way we can shoehorn them into an agreement. That is never what it&aposs been about."
