Acworth, GA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/15/2013 -- Tree maintenance and removal specialist Dana Wyatt believes strongly in helping inform Atlanta area homeowners about basic tree maintenance and removal as well as the need for working with professionals in the process. Wyatt is the owner and operator of Best Price Tree Service, which specializes in tree maintenance and removal services for Atlanta’s Cobb County and Northern Atlanta suburbs.

The beauty, majesty and practicality of trees cannot be understated, but like all living things, they need both care and maintenance. Some trees will thrive for hundreds of years without any care whatsoever, while others need constant attention just to survive. Since most people are unaware of how to keep a tree healthy, Best Price Tree Service Owner Dana Wyatt continues to share his knowledge and expertise on tree care and maintenance with Atlanta property owners. “It’s always best to work with a professional to diagnose the health of any tree and decide the best course of action,” said Wyatt.

As a longstanding and trusted name, Best Price Tree Service has provided outstanding full-service tree care in Atlanta and its northern suburbs for years. Their fully insured contractors specialize in a wide variety of tree maintenance procedures ranging from trimming to cutting, removal and grinding. According to Wyatt, trees can generally be pruned throughout the year without affecting the overall health of the tree. However, he was quick to point out that trimming and removal are serious business best left to professionals. “A dead or dying tree can potentially cause a great deal of damage to property or family, and should be removed,” said Wyatt. “The removal process can be a hazardous job in the hands of an amateur, especially trees that are close to the home.”

With Best Price Tree Service, customers deal directly with Wyatt in discussing the best maintenance or removal course of action, and each customer receives a free written proposal with specifications and price. The company is fully insured with Workman’s Compensation & General Liability. “It is our personalized approach and experience with tree maintenance that has set us apart from other Atlanta tree care companies and helped us earn the trust of Atlanta communities,” said Wyatt. Environmental Health Trust Reminds Women to Make the Bra a "No Phone" Zone

Published Case Study Validates Link between Prolonged Skin Contact and Breast Cancers

Teton Village, WY -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/23/2013 -- For many young women today, tucking cellphones in the bra has become a cool, hip way to have easy access to these electronic devices. Women can jog, drive, shop or sit in darkened movie theaters, quickly responding to tingly vibrations at their breast. Most women have no idea that cellphones are two-way microwave radios that should not be kept directly on the body warns Environmental Health Trust (EHT), a group promoting safer phone use especially for non-adult users and for pregnant users.

“As we broach the October reminder of breast cancer awareness, the media are packed with warnings about the disease. What’s missing from this welcomed public attention is the fact that the ways some people are using their phones today increases their risk of developing breast cancer and other diseases. A cellphone’s sporadic microwave radiation seeps directly into soft fatty tissue of the breast. That’s not a good thing,” warns EHT’s founder Dr. Devra Davis, cancer epidemiologist and veteran breast cancer researcher.

Adding credence to the group’s concerns regarding a link between cellphones and multifocal breast cancer is a new report in Case Reports in Medicine, highlighting four young women—ages from 21 to 39—with multifocal invasive breast cancer. This scientific paper raises concern of a possible association with nonionizing radiation of electromagnetic field emissions from cellphones. The research team, which included Dr. Lisa Bailey who is a former president of the American Cancer Society California and one of California&aposs top breast surgeons, Dr. Robert Nagourney of Rational Therapeutics one of California&aposs top oncologists and Dr. John West from Breastlink, uncovered a common theme from each of the four patients studied.

The team found all these patients regularly carried their smartphones directly against their breasts in their brassieres for up to 10 hours per day, for several years, and developed tumors in areas of their breasts underlying where the phones were carried. All patients had no family history of breast cancer, tested negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2, and had no other known breast cancer risks. Their breast imaging revealed clustering of multiple tumor foci in the breast directly under the area where the phone touched the body. The conclusion of the paper was that these cases raise awareness to the lack of safety data regarding prolonged direct contact with cellphones.

Tiffany Frantz, one of the young patients in the case study, told KTVU-TV that she had no idea there was any risk involved. "I put my cellphone right in my bra," said Frantz in the TV report that recently won an Emmy. However, her mother Traci Frantz immediately made the connection right after Tiffany developed breast cancer at age 21. "We never took it seriously until after she was diagnosed." Her tumors were exactly where her cellphone had been kept in her bra for about six years. No one ever told us that this was a very bad idea." said Traci Frantz. Their family has no genetic or other risk factors. Surgeons ended up removing Tiffany&aposs left breast.

According to surgeon and co-author of the report, Dr. Lisa Bailey, young women should never store their phones in their bras. “Until more data becomes available, efforts should be made to encourage cellular phone users to follow the recommendations of mobile device manufacturers and to avoid skin contact. Further research is urgently needed in this area. In our practice, we have started to incorporate frequency of cellular phone use and placement location into part of our routine patient-history documentation. Physicians should document this behavior and also inform their patients that, until sufficient safety data becomes available, prolonged skin contact with cellular devices should be avoided.”

“Our group works closely with physicians like Drs. Bailey, Nagourney and West and others, to report additional cases of breast cancer that resulted from holding cellphones in their brasseries. That Experimental studies show that cellphone radiation accelerates the growth of breast cancer cells and alters that of normal cells. It’s time to get a headset, use a speakerphone and take those phones out of your pockets and bras. “Far better to be safe now than sorry years later,” warns Dr. Davis.

EHT would like to hear from physicians and patients with similar cases of multifocal breast cancer tied with cell phone use and are encouraged to email EHT at info@ehtrust.org. For more information, visit http://www.ehtrust.org.

Rightway Waterproofing Now Offering Their Services for Winter Basement Waterproofing in New Jersey

$

Philadelphia, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/27/2013 -- As the Northeast temperatures start to dip, especially in New Jersey and the Jersey Shore area, many homeowners are starting to worry about the effects unpredictable weather may have on the foundation of their home. In order to protect the home during the winter months, Rightway Waterproofing is pleased to announce they are now offering their services for winter and snow melt preparation to their valued New Jersey clients. Before the winter is in full force, it is vital to have the home inspected prior to freezing temperatures so the professionals can properly manage any buildup of water.

Cold temperatures cause the ground on the home’s property to freeze and the irrigation has trouble directing rain water and melting snow away from the home. This can be especially dangerous when the gutters are filled with ice and the melting water falls just outside the edge of the property. Water can make its way into the lower level—often the basement—of the home, and damage the integrity of the home’s foundation. Buildup of water can produce cracks in the basement floor or drywall.

When preparing for winter snow melts that seep into the home, the process employed by Rightway Waterproofing involves a sump pump that will quickly and efficiently direct water away from the home. The professional technicians, members of the Basement Health Association and Certified Waterproofing Specialists, will inspect the home and foundation to ensure the best way of keeping the property safe from water damage. They offer a lifetime warranty so homeowners will never have to worry about leaks, floods, or puddles in the basement during any snow or rain storm. Water that finds its way into the home can cause mold or mildew, which will affect the indoor air quality of the home and can cause sickness or disease.

If individuals are in dire need of repairing the foundation in the basement, Rightway Waterproofing offers their clients emergency services and pump outs 24 hours per day, seven days a week. To hear more about the services of Rightway Waterproofing, or to schedule a free home inspection before the weather becomes unbearable and the home’s foundation is compromised, please call the professional basement waterproofing service at 866-741-6190 or visit their website today.

About Rightway Waterproofing
For over two decades, Rightway Waterproofing has been eradicating basement moisture, black mold and mildew in New Jersey. Their goal is to provide the best basement waterproofing, basement finishing and mold remediation services to each and every customer they come in contact with.

Public Awareness of Light Pollution Increases Due to National Media Coverage

Tucson, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/06/2013 -- Light pollution is a serious environmental problem. It wastes billions of dollars each year, harms wildlife and jeopardizes human health. Thanks to recent coverage by national media outlets, this important message is reaching more people than ever before.

Last weekend, “CBS This Morning Saturday” interviewed Bob Parks, executive director of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), for its segment “How Bad is Light Pollution?” The five-minute interview provides a quick and concise overview on light pollution and solutions to the problem.

Those wanting an in-depth discussion on light pollution can read the nine-page feature article “Where Did All the Stars Go? How Light Pollution Is Stealing the Night” in the December issue of Men’s Journal. The article provides detailed information on the IDA, light pollution’s negative effects, and indoor and outdoor lighting solutions. Informative graphics and stunning photographs complement the interesting read.

“On the occasion of IDA’s twenty fifth anniversary, it is gratifying to see national media paying serious attention to light pollution and its negative effects on human health and the environment,” said IDA Executive Director Bob Parks, “Hopefully, this national media coverage will inspire more discussions about these issues and how communities can make smarter choices for their lighting.”

Naming of Two New International Dark Sky Places Highlights UK Commitment to Dark Night Skies

$

Tucson, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/10/2013 -- The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) announced today it has designated two new International Dark Sky Places in the United Kingdom (UK), including one representing the largest land area of protected night skies in all of Europe. This brings to six the total number of IDA International Dark Sky Places in the UK, second only to the United States.

IDA is proud to recognize Northumberland International Dark Sky Park and Isle of Coll International Dark Sky Community for their exceptional efforts in helping preserve and promote dark night skies over Britain.

“The naming of two new Dark Sky Places in the UK really takes dark skies in Europe to the next level,” IDA Executive Director Bob Parks said. “We’re seeing the issue approaching critical mass and placing dark skies along the frontline of conservation issues in Britain. We hope that message extends further to continental Europe and beyond.”

Northumberland International Dark Sky Park
A UK National Park and adjacent forestry plantation encompassing nearly 580 square miles (1500 km2) of public lands in northern England, Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water & Forest Park are the first IDA-recognized International Dark Sky Park consisting of two in-dependent parkland units.

Once at the frontier of Roman Britain where Hadrian’s Wall repelled Pictish invaders, Northumberland International Dark Sky Park now serves as a bulwark against the incursion of harmful light pollution into one of the darkest locations in England.

With today’s IDA announcement, National Parks UK and Forestry Commission England adds dark skies to their portfolio of protected natural resources including the largest manmade woodland and reservoir in northern Europe. Kielder Forest provides Britain with 200 million board feet (475,000 m3) of timber annually.

The dark night sky attracts an increasing number of visitors to the region. Kielder Observatory, the UK’s largest and most active public observatory, widely promotes local astronomy events and activities. “Dark skies and astronomy have become a passion in the area,” according to Heidi Mottram, Chair of the Kielder Water and Forest Park Development Trust and Chief Executive of Northumbrian Water.

As both Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water & Forest Park began to vie independently for IDA recognition, it quickly became evident that two heads were better than one. “It made perfect sense to work together to protect one of our greatest assets and make it available to more people,” Mottram said.

Park officials hope that protecting dark skies through the promotion of responsible outdoor light-ing will increase the allure of Northumberland as a tourism destination.

“Becoming a Dark Sky Park will reinforce the status of Northumberland as an unspoiled destination offering a true sense of tranquility and wildness – a tonic in this day and age,” said Tony Gates, Chief Executive of Northumberland National Park.

Isle of Coll International Dark Sky Community
A sparse population and geographic isolation make the night skies over the Isle of Coll among the darkest in Scotland. The island adopted a quality outdoor lighting management plan to ensure Coll remains dark for many future generations of residents and visitors.

Coll lies about six miles (10 km) west of coastal Argyll and hosts just over 200 residents. It at-tracts dozens of bird species according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, which owns an extensive reserve at the west end of the island and hosts one of Coll’s recognized night sky viewing sites on its land. Nature tourism in part draws thousands of visitors to the island each year.

“Achieving dark skies status will be great for the island in many ways,” Julie Oliphant, hotelier at the Coll Hotel, explained. “Not only will it ensure that any future development on the island is done in a way that protects Coll’s natural and unspoiled beauty, but it will also help promote winter tourism.”

Fred Hall of the Argyll and Bute Council echoed the sentiment. “The Isle of Coll is a unique is-land in many ways, not least of which is its beautiful countryside and sea views but also the lack of light pollution,” he said. “I can think of no better island in the inner Hebrides to gain the Dark Skies accolade.”

Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is IDA’s thirteenth while the Isle of Coll becomes the world’s fifth International Dark Sky Community. They join four existing International Dark Sky Places in Britain: Galloway Forest Park in Scotland, Isle of Sark in the Channel Islands, Exmoor National Park in England, and Brecon Beacons in Wales.

About the IDA Dark Sky Places Program
IDA established the International Dark Sky Places conservation program in 2001 to recognize excellent stewardship of the night sky. Designations are based on stringent outdoor lighting standards and innovative community outreach. Since the program began, five communities, thirteen parks and five reserves have received International Dark Sky designations. For more information about the International Dark Sky Places Program, visit: http://darksky.org/night-sky-conservation/dark-sky-places.

About IDA
The International Dark Sky Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Tucson, Arizona, advocates for the protection of the nighttime environment and dark night skies by educating the public on the subject of night sky conservation and by promoting environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. More information about IDA and its activities may be found at http://www.darksky.org.

France Celebrates Naming of Its First International Dark Sky Reserve

The International Dark-Sky Association welcomes the Pic du Midi International Dark Sky Reserve as a new member of the IDA International Dark Sky Places program

Tucson, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/19/2013 -- The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) announced today the designation of the first International Dark Sky Place in France. In naming the Pic du Midi International Dark Sky Reserve (IDSR), IDA is pleased to recognize the immense local efforts to preserve and protect the exceptionally dark night skies over the Pyrénées Mountains.

“In creating the Reserve, the Pic du Midi team has not only protected a vanishing resource, they have made it better than it was,” said IDA Executive Director Bob Parks. “We commend and celebrate their exceptional efforts.”

The new Dark Sky Reserve will be known in France as Réserve Internationale de Ciel Étoilé du Pic du Midi. It is located in a region that currently draws 1.5 million visitors per year. Consisting of 1,202 square miles (3,112 km2) of public and private lands, it encompasses a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Pyrénées-Mont Perdu) and a French national park (Pyrénées National Park). It is the second-largest International Dark Sky Reserve in the world after Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in New Zealand.

Pic du Midi Observatory

The efforts leading to today’s designation began in the 1990s when Europe nearly lost one its premiere astronomical research facilities, the Pic du Midi Observatory. As government budget cuts threatened permanent closure, Observatory supporters secured its renaissance through a “beautiful alliance between science and tourism,” according to Daniel Soucaze des Soucaze, Executive Director of Pic du Midi.

He said the International Dark Sky Reserve designation represents an “important milestone” in the history of the Observatory, and believes IDA’s recognition coupled with the dedicated support of local communities greatly enhances the Observatory’s long-term prospects.

Achieving this designation “is of utmost importance for the future of astronomy, both professional and amateur,” said Hubert Reeves, Québécois astrophysicist and Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research.

Energy Savings, Tourism, and Research

The motivations driving the four-year effort culminating in today’s announcement expanded well beyond aesthetic and scientific considerations. According to French Senator François Fortassin, the “first aim” of the project was to minimize light pollution around Pic du Midi Observatory, but it soon became apparent there was much more to be gained.

As part of the efforts to achieve IDA recognition, a total of 251 communities adopted a comprehensive outdoor lighting management plan (LMP) that included retrofits and replacements of existing lighting fixtures, and the use of new lighting technologies. By 2013, early results showed the LMP could effectively reduce light pollution in the region by 85 percent and energy usage by 38 percent, all while maintaining safe lighting levels for residents and visitors.

The new lighting plan continues to provide “significant energy savings and offer economic development opportunities in the Hautes-Pyrénées area,” said Christian Poncet, Regional Representative of the French power company Électricité de France.

The region is capitalizing on the IDA designation as a means of furthering research into land use policy and practices, tourism business models, and resources sustainability at the nearby University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour. A team has been designated by the University to manage the Pic du Midi IDSR project and to install and maintain scientific instruments in the Pic du Midi region to monitor the quality of the night sky in the future.

Officials at Pic du Midi have even grander aspirations for preserving dark skies in the Pyrénées. In coming years, they plan to work with their Spanish counterparts to expand the protected territory into Spain, making for the first IDA Dark Sky Reserve spanning two nations.

For more information about the International Dark Sky Places Program, visit http://darksky.org/night-sky-conservation/34-ida/about-ida/142-idsplaces.

About IDA
The International Dark-Sky Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Tucson, Arizona, advocates for the protection of the nighttime environment and dark night skies by educating the policymakers and the public on the subject of night sky conservation and promoting environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. Group Seeks to Create Marine Protected Area off the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica

$
0
0

Mission Viejo, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/08/2014 -- Described by National Geographic as the “most biologically intense place on Earth,” there is an urgent need to protect the rich marine biodiversity of the Osa Peninsuladue to rampant commercial fishing that is rapidly killing off dolphins, whales, sea turtles and entire marine ecosystems. The MPA for OSA group (Marine Protected Area for OSA Peninsula) has started a campaign to have the area declared a marine protected area (MPA)to curb the commercial fishing that is destroyingthe area’s diverse marine life.

Marine biologists have been fascinated by the Osa Peninsula for years and agree that this is one of the most biologically diverse ocean ecosystems in the world. However, this marine wonderland has not been immune to commercial fishing, a practice that is fast wiping out the over twenty-five species of dolphins and whales, alongside four of the world’s eight species of sea turtles. MPA for OSA is working tirelessly to ensure these beautiful creatures don’t lose their natural habitat as it is urgent that action is taken immediately before it is too late.

“The changes I have seen in my sixteen years in this area are frightening. We used to see super mega pods of Spinner Dolphins (Costa Rica has its own sub-species of Spinner Dolphin, the Costa Rica Spinner Dolphin). We used to have to slow the boat down because there were so many sea turtles floating on the water. Not anymore, and if something isn’t done immediately, there will be nothing left for even the commercial fishermen who are exploiting and destroying the area,” said Sierra Goodman, coordinator for MPA for OSA campaign.

Costa Rican fishermen have also been witness to the drastic changes that have occurred over the years, and are afraid that a lack of action will result in a total collapse of the eco system. As local sportfisherman Fred Maschmeier said, “Twenty years ago there were Dolphins as far as the eye could see, and tuna everywhere. Today, these monster factory ships have made Costa Rica’s ocean into an almost barren sea. There are very few tuna with the dolphins. [We are] scared as hell.”

MPA for OSA has also created a petition on Avaaz to solicit the Costa Rican government to fast track the creation of the marine protected area. The group is also calling for an immediate moratorium on commercial fishing while details are worked out. The immediate moratorium would put an end to commercial fishing on the Osa Peninsula and allow parties privy to the matter to work out details after the ecosystem is protected.

In addition to the call for immediate cease of commercial fishing is a crowd funding campaign aimed at sourcing funds to continue the necessary research and also get local communities and the government to work together. Interested individuals and organizations are being asked to sign a petition to show their support for MPA for OSA’s campaign, and donate to the crowd fund.

The website has all the necessary information for individuals to get informed on the issues and the online petition can be signed here. The group has also established a presence on Google+, Facebook, and Twitter. Videos of their efforts can be viewed on YouTube, and any donations made to the fund site.

MPA for OSA stresses that this very urgent campaign needs the support of individuals who care about marine life and don’t want to see one of the most beautiful marine-life ecosystems destroyed by commercial fishing activities.
